Sucking of the thumb is a positively reinforced action. When the mother tires of brestfeeding, and wants to ween the baby, the baby will suck its thumb and other items that are soft and/or resemble a nipple. Therefor, we, as mammals, theoretically have that bred into us. You apparently have it more active than others, but a reptilian child (born of an egg, cold blooded, not raised on breastmilk) will not have the urge to suck its thumb. It wouldn't be able to suck its thumb anyways, because the mouths of reptiles can't make suction, due to the thin, long lips, this also eliminates its ability to breastfeed.

He is standing upright, right thumb in mouth, left hand holding, most probably, a parental figure. The adult is blending in with the background, making it hard to see. You can trace the bodyline by using the loincloth as a reference.
