Roy's team assumed his habit of chasing the ball and ignoring everything else would eventually see him plunge headlong into the ocean. In fact he ended up someplace a lot hotter and slimier.

Weirdly enough, this joke appeared in a Bugs Bunny cartoon I think it was, where a player said "I got it!" and was hit so hard by the baseball it buried him and a tombstone with "He got it" popped up.
