Douglas A-1E Skyraider - USAF Museum 04-18-2017
Title can't be empty.
Title can't be empty.
The A-1's call sign was "Sandy" in Vietnam, and in an age of supersonic jets this aircraft was notable for the time that it could remain over a downed pilot and the firepower it carried.

The Huey pilots loved it too, not just because it helped save a lot of downed pilots, but because it could travel at the same speed as the choppers, giving them a whole lot of readily available firepower right when they needed it. There was no need to call for a bombing run and then wait for the bombers to show up, because the Skyraider was right there and could see the same targets as the choppers and could hit them before they had a chance to scatter.
I know of a bar where, depending on who's there at the time, A-10 pilots have a hard time buying beer. :)
