Fleeing from the armies of Illandra Kylaryn and her family eventually came across the City of Stairs where they offered to assist the inhabitants and protect them from the ever expanding Illandra. Eventually Kylaryn, known to most as The Wind that Carries, becomes the city's ruler. She uses the city as the headquarters of Death in the Night and plots her revenge against the people that destroyed her home and harmed those she cared for.
