Red Moon: Revolution: Chapter 30
It seemed as if the whole world had just been waiting for them to return to Berlin. Waiting to pounce because everyone who came back from America was immediately set upon with news, appointments, meetings. Brennan 'needed' to know what was going on with Director Caughey. She snatched up Sean and Rob the minute that security cleared them and was going over all that she could about the old man. Rob divulged the limited amount of knowledge that he could about his reclusive and scheming father, but the more questions he answered, the more were created.
Sean, being a werewolf from America where packs were more isolated and preferred to avoid getting involved with 'European affairs,' he was also heavily questioned by those interested in making more frequent contact. Some were hostile and angry that the American packs had done so little when the Inquisition was at their doorstep. Most just wanted to open up more lines of communication and hold talks with the hope of garnering support. One even went so far as to offer herself to Sean as a mate, but he kindly refused and tried to make it clear that he didn't have much power in the packs there, being still very new.
Rommel, never one to stop, went into damage control mode. He had left Berlin in a stable condition, only to find that it had fallen to pieces in his absence. He took it upon himself to shoulder as much work as he could and began to direct the rebuilding of what was lost. He had humans and werewolves alike running back and forth not one hour after he was left to his own devices.
Trevor was excited. It was almost funny to him to think that the issue of many of his werewolf related woes was from a small fragment of metal lodged in his brain and stopping it from healing fully. It should have been more obvious all things considered.
Surgery scared him, though. The only time he had ever been sedated, minus Russia, had been to remove his wisdom teeth. The doctor had numbed his senses with nitrous oxide and then inserted a needle into his arm which then applied a general anesthetic. He was told to count back from ten. Didn't even make it to eight before he was out.
Rommel told Trevor that wouldn't be possible. He would have to be awake for the operation since they were operating on his brain. Eric would need Trevor awake so that he could tell if something went wrong. That scared Trevor more than anything, to be awake and fully conscious as the doctor rooted through his head to try and shovel out the bullet fragments.
First thing was first. He had an appointment at the hospital in two days where it would be determined if fragments were even the culprit in Trevor's woes and then from there, surgery. Even before that, however, he needed to talk with Dmitri, and the big wolf had a few things to talk about as well.
"They want me to mate with a female." Dmitri paced back and forth the small office. He wished that he had more room to move around, every time he turned around, felt as if he was going to knock something over. At least they had cleared the entire floor to give them privacy.
Trevor sat patiently in the one chair that Dmitri hadn't already tossed out of the room and watched his mate simmer. He had been so excited to share his good news with Dmitri, but now those spirits had been dampened by Dmitri. He hated to see his love in such a state.
"It goes against the law of the pack," Dmitri said. "Once mates, always mates. There can be no disloyalty." Dmitri had been more than outraged when his father and friend, Sergei had asked him to mate with a female to create an heir, to quell the naysayers of the pack. They could break away as far as Dmitri was concerned. Loyalty was one of the fundamental principals of the pack, to follow without question. If there were members of the pack that were questioning their commitment, they weren't needed.
The Alpha had listened to the argument but had kept to his side. He felt that it was the best way to maintain the pack after the Inquisition was dealt with. That was when the Alpha was going to step down. He was tired and old. His body had been through a lot in the past two years, dealing with the war and the interpack politics that went with it. He wanted his son to inherit the pack as a strong, unified body in a new world. This was the way that he determined would be best, and now the Alpha was going to leave the rest to Trevor. He had faith that Trevor would see the logic and side with him in the end. Dimitri wouldn't deny his mate.
"I can't." Dmitri finally stopped pacing, and half sat, half leaned against the barren office desk that populated the room. "I can't do this to you. Not even for the pack. I won't."
"Do what to me?" Trevor said questioningly. Just as the Alpha had known, Trevor did understand, and it did make sense to him. "You're not betraying me like you think you are."
Dmitri was shocked. He had fully believed that Trevor would side with him.
"Don't look at me like that." Trevor reached out and tried to soothe his mate by rubbing up and down his leg.
One thing that Dmitri hadn't quite managed to grasp was that he didn't really know how his partner thought. They had only just been together for a bit after two years of separation. He expected Trevor to think like him, but the man from Seattle was a lot different than the wolf from Russia.
"I would be breaking the unsaid vow to you. The pact that was made the first time we mated." He smashed his fingers together to symbolise the bond they had. "One that shouldn't be broken."
"Don't think of it like that." Trevor sat up straight in his chair. "Don't you know about surrogates and stuff like that?" Trevor tapped his finger against this chin, thinking. "Then again, I'm not sure about the rules of that in Russia."
Dmitri settled down, listening to Trevor as he went in depth to explain how it wasn't that uncommon for a couple, gay or not, who couldn't have children to get someone else to carry a child for them. The surrogate mother would be pregnant with the child of one of the couple and would give birth the baby. The baby would then eventually be passed on to the couple, and everyone would be happy.
"No breaking vows. Nothing like that." Trevor was happy to see that Dmitri seemed to be taking his words seriously. The big guy clung to his words making Trevor all the more grateful to have him in his life. Dmitri may be quick to blow other's opinions off and substitute his own reality at times, but he seemed more than eager to alter them for Trevor.
"And," Dmitri said, his voice no longer raised. "You're okay with this?"
"Absolutely." Trevor nodded his head. "Sure, technically the child won't be mine. Not genetically, but it will be yours, and that's enough. It will make everyone happy." He stood up and hugged Dmitri, pressing his face into that familiar chest. "Just imagine raising a family. You and me. Who cares about the fine details, it will be our family." Trevor had fantasized about having a family all through his life. He never knew how it would happen. Before Russia, he had thought about finding a nice man who shared his interests and settling down, eventually adopting and raising someone. They would live in a smaller home at the edge of the city and close to a good school where he could watch his child grow up and go on to start a life. Now that fantasy had the chance to become real with a few minor adjustments.
"I..." Dmitri was at a loss for words. Just like that, hearing almost the same argument that his father had given, but from the lips of Trevor had managed to get Dmitri to actually listen and try to understand. "Is this what you want?"
"I think that it 'd be great." Trevor held onto Dmitri. "Plus, preventing some kind of civil war in the pack would help as well. For the most part, just having a family, settling down in a way... I would like that."
Dmitri gave Trevor a squeeze and then held him out so he could look down on him. "If that will make you happy."
"Not just make me happy. Make us happy." Trevor didn't want to force Dmitri to do anything. It had to be a decision made by both of them. Rommel had described the tragedy that had followed Sergei his entire life. How the ability to choose had been taken away from him and how he resented his life because of it and had only just recently managed to find something that resembled a happy life. Now once again, that could be taken away, and Trevor didn't want for Dmitri to feel as if he didn't have a choice and end up resenting the child. "Only do this if it will make you happy as well."
Dmitri gave a soft smile. "Trust me when I say that making you happy is all I need to make me happy." Dmitri had some reservations, though he had nothing against having a child. Starting a family was actually something that he had greatly desired for a very long time, it was just that he was afraid that Trevor would reject a surrogate. He had assumed that Trevor would be against it and acted as such, but hearing that Trevor was actually very supportive of the idea, it took a load off of his shoulders.
"So, you'll do it?"
"Yes," Dmitri said and pulled his mate back into a hug and let out a massive sigh that caused the hug to turn into more of a squeeze.
Dmitri release Trevor when he let out a bit of a labored meep and the smaller person sat back down to catch his breath real fast. He was okay.
"You mentioned," Dmitri said, recalling the conversation right before he had gone on a rant. "You had something to tell me."
"Oh yeah." Trevor went ahead and told Dmitri about his visit with the doctor, Eric.
"And you trust this doctor?" Dmitri voiced the one concern. He had never heard of the doctor and was being cautious.
"Rommel trusts him fully," Trevor explained. "To be truthful, I'm okay with trusting anyone he believes." For good reason as well. Trevor had read about Rommel in history texts, and they all talked about how Rommel was seen as one of the most reliable and trustworthy people in the German Army. He was known to spare Allied spies from the wrath of the SS and often acted on his won morals instead of the morals of the Nazis. Trevor had no issue following Rommel's lead simply because of his reputation.
"And the surgery will take place soon?"
From what Trevor could discern from his conversation with the doctor, the surgery would be held very soon, if not, immediately after it was determined that there were fragments that needed to be removed. Fast was better in Trevor's opinion. He was eager to know what was being kept from him, locked away in his head.
"Possibly within the week."
Dmitri frowned.
"What's wrong."
"My father has said that I would need to make a decision fast since the female that he had picked out, the one that is strongest and best suited to bear a child, had just gone into heat," Dmitri said. "With the decision made between us, it would only be a few deeds before I am to..." He didn't know how to say, have sex, without making it sound bad. Trevor got the message, though.
"I'm guessing you wanted me nearby as a sort of moral support."
Dmitri nodded. "It would feel strange not to know that you would be there afterward, and I cannot delay. It is not often that one of us goes into heat, and it does not last long. Is it not possible to reschedule."
"I don't think so," Trevor answered. "This surgery 's not actually legal, and the doctor seems to have it all set up already. To ask him to make any changes would be a burden."
"I understand." Dmitri lowered his head. Feeling a little unsure now. This was a different kind of fear than he was used to. Trevor wasn't going to be there for him afterward. He would need to face this next phase by himself. He had gone through his life tackling challenges alone before, but as soon as Trevor was more of a guaranteed part of his life, he had already adjusted to having him close at hand at all times. Going back to the solitary state of mind was much harder that anticipated.
"Don't worry." Trevor stood up and patted Dmitri on the side of the face. "I'll just be across town, and when is all said and done, we'll have a nice laugh about it over some lunch or something."
Dmitri nodded and leaned forward to give Trevor a kiss that quickly turned into something just a little bit more than an innocent kiss, but not so far that the other occupants of the building may get a rude awakening.
I know, maybe Dmitri could have sex with the she wolf in Trevor's Hospital room just before Trevor was taken into surgery. Then they could be there for each other. :)
