Remember Master from the start.

Sir and Madam brought me home from creche. Brought me to Master room. Master was bundle. Small. Smelly.

"Take care of him, Jane."

Knew how to take care of cubs. Took very good care of Master. Slept next to crib. Kept changed. Wet nurse. Played.  Was good girl.

Master grew fast. Grab my fur. Giggle. Crawl. Look at me. Burble. Love to play with Master. Hold Master. Give love.

Madam not spend much time with Master. She say love him. I sure she love him. But Master cry when she hold him. Only quiet when she give him back to me.

One day, Master make noise at me. Noise sound like word. "Mah-mah." Poke at me. "Mah-mah."

Tell Sir and Madam. Proud of Master. Very early for human cub to say word.

Madam angry. Slap. Muzzle hurt. "You're a dog, not his mother! Don't you dare let him call you that!"

I whimper. Master scream. Sir and Madam leave. No food for Jane tonight. Master calm soon, but still call Jane "Mah-mah."

Make sure that Madam never hear.

Soon Master walk. Master talk. Master like to hug Jane. Master kiss Jane on head. Weaning hard, but Madam order. Scream at Jane. Miss it. 

Master still call Jane "mama." Jane bad dog. Jane teach Master to lie. Master only call Jane Mama in private. 

Master love outdoors. Spend much time with Jane on grounds.  Run. Play. Jane teach bicycle. Jane bandage knee when fall. Jane throw ball. Jane catch ball. Master happy.

Snow in winter. Jane pull sled. Master laugh. Master shout "giddyup!" Jane is good girl pulling Master's sled.

Sir and Madam call Jane to study. 

"It's time for John to start school hours. You came to us as a full nanny. I expect him reading and writing soon, Dog."

Master smart. Master not want to learn reading. "Boring!" Master shout.

Jane ask Master to please learn for Jane. Master learn letters very good then.

Year passes. 

Sir and Madam send Master to boarding school. Say Jane not go. Say he need Butler, not Nanny. Master angry. Master scream. Master hold onto Jane and refuse to let go.

Jane go with Master to boarding school. Jane happy. Jane not sure if Jane could live without Master.

Jane have to learn with Master, too. Jane learn that Fur not treated like Master treat Jane. Fur to be not seen or heard. Master laughed at by children for hugging Jane. Master stubborn. Master not care. Master punch nasty laughing boy. Nasty laughing boy go away. Not see him again.

People not laugh at Jane after that.

Master find friends. Friends treat their Fur like Master treat Jane. Mistress Liz and Master James and Master Archie also hug their Fur. Hug Jane sometimes too. 

Jane and Furs love their children. Always love them. When children go home for summers, Sir and Madam love Master. Master say he love them. Call Mama and Daddy. In private, say Jane his only Mama. Jane bad girl. Jane not say no.

Children grow fast. Soon Jane not help with homework. Only listen. Nod. Smile at Master when he excited about something. 

Children grow. Soon not children anymore. Master taller than Jane. Still hug Jane. Even Mistress Liz taller than Jane. Master's friends stick together. Jane have good ears. Jane hear names for Master's friends. "Dogfuckers!" Rude. Nasty. Jane is Master's mama. Not a tail-lifter. Makes Jane cry one night when Jane hear things said about Master. Master hug Jane. Master say Jane is best. Fur Rico and Sal and Meg also best. "If I only have three friends and four Furs in all the world because it's not popular to love your Fur friend, then I'm in good company, Jane."

Classes harder. Children more stressed. Jane and Furs try to keep them happy. Hear talk of "college" and "future." Sounds scary. Jane tell Master so. Master also scared, but Master promise Jane and Master together forever. 

Jane and Sal find Mistress Liz and Master in closet one day doing naughty thing. Against school rules. Big trouble. Jane and Sal good liar. Make sure not caught. Mistress Liz ask Jane if Master Mama like her for Master. Jane say not sure, have to write Madam to find out. Mistress Liz laughs a lot. Mistress Liz explain asking Jane. Jane says Mistress Liz good lover for Master. Mistress Liz happy about this. Jane offers to teach how care for cubs. Mistress Liz laughing again. Warm Jane heart. When Master hear, Master laugh too.

Soon children talking about "graduation." Master and Mistress will go to same "college." Sir and Madam very angry about college.

"You had a perfectly good legacy spot at Hamilton, and you turn it down to go to Goddamn California? No son of mine will go to California and get his head filled with nonsense. You know they'd put you in jail for having a Fur servant, you know. Did you think about that?"

Jane worry about Master and Mistress. Sir lock Master in his room. Refuse to let leave. Screams at him every day. Threaten to take Jane. Master scream back, but cry. Scared.

One night, knock at window. Sal. Sal ask Jane to bring Master and bag outside. Mistress Liz have car. Mistress Liz give Master a ring. She have ring on her finger. Call this "eloping." Master very happy about this. Journey long and Jane and Sal have to cover ears every night because Master and Mistress happy but very noisy.

Journey end in California. Place called "Davis." People come to talk to Jane and Sal. Say they are "free." Jane and Sal ask to go back to Master and Mistress. Master and Mistress explain new names now. Liz and John. Jane still Mama, though. 

Liz and John happy. Tell Jane and Sal never going to be separated. Jane and Sal meet other Furs. Furs think that Liz and John normal. No nasty words behind backs. 

Jane happy. Never be separate from John. Is good girl.
