Yes, that's a balrog and yes that's a griffin and a hippogriff. In my opinion, aside from Smaug, the balrog in Moria was the coolest monster in middle earth. Now I hope that parts of the Silmarillion get made into a movie, that would be so cool to see the battles with Balrogs as well as Ancalagon the black and the Valar creating middle earth.
