Martin MB-2 Bomber (Replica) - USAF Museum 04-18-2017

This was the original US Army heavy bomber. It carried a crew of four and 3,000 pounds / 1363 kg of bombs. It was slow and had limited range, but it was the start of a line that culminated in the likes of the B-17, B-24 and B-29 of WW II.

You can see some evolution in prop design with this one.

The National Advisory Council on Aeronautics (NACA), the predecessor to NASA, was very active in wing and prop design. Much of the work was done at Langley Memorial Aeronautical Laboratory (now NASA Langley Research Center). but in 1941, NACA opened the Aircraft Engine Research Laboratory (now NASA Glenn Research Center). We still have the Prop House where many of the WW II propeller designs were developed.
