I had a similar experience in real life. I used to work for a restaurant that had a rather, 'casual' attitude to sanitation. I only used the meat slicer once or twice a week, but I had to clean it every day since I was the only who would clean it. I came back from two and a half weeks of annual training to find it hadn't been cleaned since I left.

After a few minutes of staring at it in disbelief, I was tempted to go back to my car and bring in the tire iron and keep it handy in case what was on the slicer tried to attack me when I started cleaning it.

The worst part of that incident was that, sanitation wise, that wasn't the worst thing that happened there.

(BTW, I didn't work there for very long.)
