"Lola's Gift"
Here's the illustration for chapter 34 of my novel, "[i]Family Tails[/i]" -- "Lola's Gift".
Shown is Rob Cloud sitting on the ground next to Lola's grave (which is to the left), and Magnus -- Lola's son (to the right) -- is fulfilling his mother's last wish by sharing her memories, thoughts, feelings, desires, and dreams with Rob. From left to right, the six images are:
(1) when Lola met Rob for the first time;
(2) Rob and Lola forging their friendship;
(3) Rob and Lola napping together;
(4) Lola's love for Rob, which she could not express at the time;
(5) Rob, Magnus, and Lola watching TV together;
(6) Lola saying her farewell.
As in the story, Rob had no idea that Lola was part human and had human-like feelings for him (this was before Rob was given the genetic enhancement that imparted the telepathic ability). He only thought that she was a special animal friend, though before she died, Lola imparted her dreams, memories, thoughts, wishes, and desires concerning Rob to her son, Magnus, in hopes that one day he would be able to give them to Rob. In this scene, Rob finally understands how Lola felt about him, and in a sense, has fulfilled at least two of her wishes -- that he could receive this information, and that one day he would be able to "give more" to someone else (who turned out to be Helga Katt, the Norwegian forest cat G.E.L.F. that he eventually married).
I drew this using a 0.5 mm mechanical pencil with HB lead, a 6B graphite stick, various blending and shading tools, on Georgia-Pacific's "Everyday Copy & Print" paper.
