Pamella - Portrait

I decided to draw a portrait of Pamella, one of the bat G.E.L.F.s that had a minor role in my novel, "[i]Family Tails[/i]". Although I didn't mention what kind of bat she was in the story, here I've portrayed her as a Californian leaf-nosed bat...and grown up, to boot. I'm not sure if I'll put her portrait in the printed book yet, though am still weighing that possibility.

I drew this using a 0.5 mm mechanical pencil with HB lead, a 6B graphite stick, various blending and shading tools, on Georgia-Pacific "Everyday Copy & Print" paper.

Always pictured your G.E.L.F. anthrobats as having arms and fingers, with wing arms on the back akin to dragon morphs. Not sure how she could work a computer or do much with her fingers being wing membrane supports.

I drew Kylie this way, too, and went into a bit on that in the story. I try to draw my characters as anatomically correct as possible for an anthro character. Bats have five digits on their "hands" just like we do, but their thumb sticks out by itself so that they can hook onto things with it, and the four fingers make up the "ribs" of the wings. In normal bats, the first two fingers are fairly close together, and the other two are spread around to the side of their hand, with a thin membrane connecting them (there's plenty of good images on Google showing the structure of a bat's wing). In the story, I wrote where the scientists creating the G.E.L.F.s separated the first finger from the wing, so that the bat G.E.L.F.s would have at least a basic ability to grasp things between thumb and forefinger. Kylie wonders what she will be able to do in life since she doesn't have hands like the others. She would require a lot of room for her wings to sit at a computer, and could only type by "hunt-and-peck". In "[i]Dagers of Darkness[/i]", the bat G.E.L.F.s have normal arms and hands (no wings), though there are some "throwbacks" to the early ones who had wings. The android avatar of Lilith, the A.I. of S.F.S. [i]Nightspirit[/i], SLG-74, does have both human-like arms and hands as well as wings (she is equipped with a null gravity generator that neutralizes her mass and allows her to use her wings for propulsion through an atmosphere).

Oh, one other thing...if you think of it, it would likely be impossible for a biological being with a skeltal structure to have both arms and wings. The muscles for flapping the wings are large and have to be well anchored to the breastbone (sternum), which would be shaped like a "keel" (as it is in birds). It seems that there could be only arms -or- wings, not both, just due to the physical bone and muscle structures involved. Given that, I probably didn't draw her chest (the ribcage and muscles, not her breasts) large enough. :^/

Thanks...and yes, she is. ;)

Heh, a guy in Micky D's stopped to talk to me while I was drawing her, and he remarked that it was the first time he'd ever seen a bat with cleavage. :P
