The slagoids
Title can't be empty.
Title can't be empty.
What to say about the slagoids, well firstly they were named by an explorer who was particularly disgusted by the look of them, and thus gave them their very unattractive name. They live in the tropical swamps where the air is constantly humid and there is ample moisture around, as they are a species that simply cannot withstand dry weather, so luckily they are never seen outside the confines of the uninhabited swamps near the equator. Due to the environment they live in there are rarely any clashes between them and the more sophisticated races, they also seem to be strict herbivores for the most part as well and tend not to attack or even pay any attention unless they feel threatened.
They are a very unappealing species of bipedal humanoids, by far the most unintelligent of the humanoid races to date. Their weapons are crude, their communication is primitive and so far there has been no success to being able to understand them, not to say that there has been any studies on that field. Needless to say, once the discovery of this species was made some of the higher races attempted to take them as slaves. This however did not work out very well, but several discoveries were made of them during the process. Firstly the slime they are covered in is incredibly toxic, however it does not kill instantly and the time of death after it getting into your bloodstream varies from a day to a week. This connection didn't occur immediately, only after several handmaids and other slaves tasked with cleaning up the areas off of their leavings began to die mysteriously. Soon however the connection was made and the majority of the slagoids that were taken as slaves were promptly killed off, this happened before any of the slagoids were able to be put into slave labor, as teaching them the basics of labor turned out to be akin to teaching a dog to do tricks.
Very little is still known about them however, as it is completely unknown where they come from and how they are created. They do not seem to have any tribes or social structure, making finding them difficult, as they are mostly nocturnal and during the day they tend to sleep in the shallow muddy waters of the swamp, effectively camouflaging them, before becoming active again after night fall. When very close to a place where a slagoid has just been though, you may smell a very strong pungent and acidic smell, which is caused by the slime that they excrete from their bodies. Another way of knowing one is nearby a slagoid nest is by looking around and seeing if there is an unusual amount of snails and slugs around, as those tend to be more numerous around areas where the slagoids are as well. They sometimes let out a various assortment of low groans, growls and hisses, but they do not seem to communicate verbally. What seems more likely is that they communicate using the antennae on their heads, as whenever two or more of the slagoids meet they tend to perform various signals using their antennae. Not once have they been encountered fighting and most encounters between the members of the species end in them continuing their own way.
The area where the slagoids live seems to have had some more civilized population some time in the past, as the deep swamps are dotted by crumpled down stone structures. In these areas slagoid activity is usually the highest. It is impossible to say if the slagoids are the descendants of the people that lived there, as the ruins were discovered after the smabb were found.
The air of mystery around the slagoids cause them to be a subject of a plethora of suspicions and folklore. Some of the races that live around the swamps have had a longer history with the slagoid and their folklore is filled with various tales and speculations of them. In most folklore passages they are seen more as an evil presence than a good one, most likely lending to their unattractive looks and primitive lifestyle. One fact that keep popping up in the folklore is that they are known to abduct people from the towns surrounding the swamps during night and then they turn these abducted people into their kin. Of course in the night a regular human could be mistaken as one of the slagoid , as it is not unheard of human slave traffickers recruiting new slaves from the less populated areas. However the abduction theory may not ring completely false, as frequently some of the slagoid are found wearing rags of old clothing on them. Also there is the fact that one may be able to see human, or any of the other races, bones inside when the slagoid are up against light, this could lend some truth to the abduction theory.
The slagoids are not very good fighters when faced head on. Their movement is sluggish and they are slow to dodge incoming attacks. They favor using crude spears above anything else, which they tend to coat with their own slime, creating a very deadly and effective weapon. Due to their whole body being somewhat spongy one may find close range combat to be quite difficult against them, despite their slow movement. It is not unusual to have ones sword get stuck inside one of them after a swing, leaving the attacker hopelessly vulnerable unless they pull back quickly. Using any sort of ranged piercing weaponry would be advised as this would leave you out of their reach and you wont need to worry about your weapon getting stuck inside one. Of course due to the environment they live in, it is easy to become forced into close quarters combat if one is not careful of their surroundings. Of course one has to be careful not to touch one of them without gloves, or let them touch you, due to the toxic nature of the slime on their bodies.
