Chie’chief
The Chie’chief is a small furred creature of the planet designated Nu'riché, it is of a feline-like evolution, about the size of a terrier, with short, extremely fine fur, long ears and tail, large eyes with excellent night-vision, and a bony structure upon their foreheads which is more prominent in females.
They sport two large growths upon their back, one on either side of their body, which house organs of as-yet unknown purpose; their position on the outside of their protective internal skeletal structure indicates that they are not vital organs, and recordings of Chie’chief with one or even both missing have been documented. They appear to be designed to store oxygen in vast quantities, though why is not clear. They also give off unusual heat and electro-magnetic signatures, which throw-off and interfere with scanning technology. Supported theories include a decoy for predators or extra-respiratory organs given their unique traits.
They are highly curious of their surroundings, a trait which sometimes leads to dangerous or potentially fatal situations. While they appear to be relatively harmless a species, they are predatory in nature, preying on rodents and insects smaller than themselves. No known fatalities from this species have been recorded, however they are highly protective of their lengthy tail, and shin-mauling is inevitable for anyone who would accidentally tread on one.
They are a quasi-nocturnal species, and prefer night to day for hunting due to their sensitivity to light, and their staple prey (rodents and insects) being more prolific at night. When not hunting or exploring, the Chie’chief retreats to a den, usually hidden between large, hard to move objects or underground, which they often fill with jewellery, coins, or other shiny objects they have located during their exploration. Believed to be for mating purposes, the Chie’chief is very fond of shiny objects, and will hide them away should they find one they can carry. Feral Chie’chief dens can be a veritable treasury of surface gold, silver or gemstones, especially dens near rivers or mines for such artefacts.
Their self defence capabilities are well documented, including tooth and claw; at night, should a predator happen upon them, they close their eyes and emit bright flashes of light by pulsing vibrant bioluminescence across their entire body, blinding their hunter momentarily so as to escape. During the day, their fur can camouflage them to be nigh invisible, exactly how is not understood though is believed to be a refraction of light. These two traits made them popular pets to Archethalian children.
A third evolutionary miracle is their immunity to electrical harm. Huge amperages have been sent through their tiny frames in experiments by the Archethal, none of which caused fatalities to the Chie’chief subjects. They appear to actually absorb electrical energy to sustain their body, capable of fuelling their body in place of feed, allowing the rest to ground itself harmlessly. The extent of this survival is impressive, recordings of a Chie’chief surviving the vacuum of space for over an hour during an accident by chewing through electrical cabling and biting into the conductive cable within. It appears to allow their blood to transmit the same oxygen through their body almost twenty times before the creature need breathe again.
It is unknown if this experiment has been conducted on Chie’chief missing the growths on its back.
Currently Chie’chief are found primarily on Nu'riché, where they hunt and scavenge for food and shiny items. It is unknown if a possible catch-and-tame plan is in the works despite their relative ease in taming and surprising loyalty to owners.
