The Reifier - Ink
Title can't be empty.
Title can't be empty.
As living beings, we shape the world around us. This has been the case ever since the first forms of life arrived on earth billions of years ago: the environment affects life, and life affects its environment. These effects range from the utilitarian to the vocational, whether it be creating a shelter from the elements, constructing tools to aid in survival, or creating artwork to stimulate our imaginations. We create our world as we build our lives through a feedback loop of influence on our minds and action from our bodies.
The driving force of my work is the idea of a being that explores its world, taking in the sensory wonders and using those to change the world for the better and even creating new ones altogether. Dolphins are known to have insatiable curiosity as part of their reputation for being generally very intelligent. Although they may not be extensively technological creatures, they still have managed to construct some of the most intricate societies on this blue planet. They may eventually develop a technological civilization of their own in ways we can hardly imagine. So far, they’ve managed to use sponges as “gloves” for their beaks in one documented instance. There exist many possibilities.
T.J. Dolphin, here standing in an infinite marble quarry, might be just a creation of my own design. But he could also conceivably one day exist in a world of walking, technologically advanced cetaceans. In any case, he serves as my avatar and as a representation of the ideas I wish to convey through my art. Although skilled in combat, he spends more of his time creating. The tools he holds are his paint brush and sledgehammer, for the creation of two-dimensional and three-dimensional imagery respectively. When he strikes material with his sledgehammer, it does not shatter into dust but turns into his vision; he has Thor-like powers over electricity channeled through the hammer. He wears nothing but work boots and work gloves at all times, a reflection of his desire to build. But beyond being a musclebound construction worker and soldier, he spends restless nights thinking and dreaming, not only of his next project but of the big questions that hound him day in and day out.
How will he shape his world?
Special thanks to my friend for the idea of T.J. being Thor with his sledgehammer!
