The Serpent - Nashville Parthenon 06-04-2015

According to the sign, the serpent represents either Ericthonios, a deified king of early Athens, or the people of Athens. Athena's shield protects him as she protects Athens.

I /am/ wondering if it is actually gold or brass, though. A lot of "gold" gilding these days uses brass or bronze look-alike foil. I have used it myself.

It was well worth the trip. They do not allow photographs on the ground floor, but they have a nice art collection there.
