Given the number of animals that can swallow a human whole at Tame Camp - including the little honey badger that has almost managed an adult human - it's no surprise when an ostrich showed up who could and did eat a man whole.

As is often the case at Tame Camp, no one knew that the person in question went there to get eaten. Or maybe they didn't. Unlike the mammalian predators, even Mdogo the honey badger couldn't talk to the ostrich and the first anyone knew about it was the ostrich heaving up a pellet of slimy clothing after digesting its meal.

Unable to communicate in any way with the bird, the usual Camp rules had to be followed with extra care. As in, "Don't let a critter 'play at' swallowing your head. It may not be playing."
