I can see your point, though i disagree.
It's more so the artist can keep track of the characters owner. As i understand it, the artist has had quite a few stolen character issues. Almost to the degree of non-stop. By doing it this way, it's easier to manage the issue.

Please do not take any offence in this as it’s not my intent. I don’t necessarily agree but can understand the concerns of an artist however everyone is entitled to their opinions including yourself so I can respect that. From mine it’s just an artist that doesn’t want to fully sell the character. If it’s sold it’s sold, gone, finito. Once sold the artist isn’t having their character stolen it would be the person who has it then as it’s not theirs anymore. The artist doesn’t need to keep track of the character anymore either as it’s not theirs. Or is it? Giving artist credit is another matter which is understandable. As long as the art or signature isn’t tampered with, it’s all the same to me. Gone is gone. Although if your happy then it’s what matters. I can respect your opinion. Lovely character and love the green eyes I’ll have to check out the artist if you wouldn’t mind linking.

I am under no impression that the artist still has partial ownership over the character. Just wants to keep track. I guess the artist has had people steal characters and try and commission them with them as well.

To use your car example, and i'll be using Ford for my continuation of the example.
When you bought it and took it home, it still has the ford emblems on the front and rear. Everyone knows who made it and is like crediting the artist. The car also has a VIN and license plate that the DOT and police uses to keep track of who owns that specific car, and can use those numbers in the event of a theft. Neither the DOT or police own the car.

Any ways, as a gear head, that's my way of thinking on the matter.
And yes, it is alright to have our differences as long as we're civil about it.
