Oh, man! My first political cartoon! I never thought I'd see the day when I would draw one of these. The internet blew up on April 23, 2015 over an announcement of Paid Mods for Skyrim on the Steam Workshop. Whatever side you're on, you can be sure that it's a giant mess.

Also, I feel I should include this link: https://www.change.org/p/valve-remove-the-paid-content-of-the-steam-workshop
Admittedly, I normally laugh at online petitions like those, because they typically have little chance of actually having any effect, but, in this case, I feel inclined to recommend it anyway - if nothing else, it can help provide measurable numbers to show just how many people are opposed to the concept of paid mods.
Yes, I believe they need to completely remove the current system. It just needs to go. Things need to return to how they were before. Then, if they want, Valve needs to decide on a new system, present it to the community, see what the general say is about it, and then try to implement it then if its favorable. As of now, though, they have and still are dragging their rep through the mud, and I don't know that they will fully recover from this. They have pissed a lot of people off.
I definitely worry about the future of gaming with this, and I'm against the system they have set up because I believe it will be the downfall of future games to be created. But there's something else that bothers me about this, too. People are now talking about modding being a job. It's not a real job, though. If it WAS a real job (because they're being compensated by companies who take a large share of the revenue while providing a measly portion back), then their payout is ILLEGAL.
They are being paid LESS than minimum wage and working for pennies at a time. They receive no company benefits, and the companies of Valve and Bethesda claim NO responsibility for their mod or for keeping it updated.
Modders and gamers are on the losing end of this deal, and Valve needs to retract everything that it's done ASAP.
