What started out as a contest entry turned out to be a surprisingly enjoyable song by me! Well, by me and for me. I know one other person enjoyed the song as much as I did, but, surprisingly, I really enjoyed both working on this song and now listening to the song.

So, yes. One of the more well-known music production sample providers, Cymatics, was holding a contest last year. For the release of their sample pack “Titan”, they offered a beta version of the pack for musicians to use to create a remix and enter it in a contest. I’ve never participated in anything like that so I didn’t know what to do or how to do it. I do know that they explicitly stated that you “MUST use the samples available in the pack” (obviously), which I [chose to interpret] as I could use ONLY the samples available in the pack. And, thus, EVERY instrument consists of some sample from the sample back. Drawing inspiration from Andrew Huang’s series “4 Producers, 1 Sample”, this feat is more interesting when you know that the kick drum is made custom using one of the provided kick drums and then some piece of another sample that I don’t currently remember. The snare drum during the drop, as well, is a mix of one of the snares provided in the pack layered under an overprocessed cowbell sample (a trick I learned from those videos as well as many other EDM tutorial videos). Finally, the growl bass, or screamer bass, is another custom instrument from a repurposed sample. Simply, the bass from the beginning of the song. The song begins with a loop of an arp, lead, and bass provided by the sample pack. They also provide each part individualized, called “stems”. I took a sample of the bass stem and used the Vital plugin to repurpose it into the screamer bass that you hear during the drop.

In an effort to have my piece stand out among the rest (which, clearly, it did not, because sadly, I did not win the contest), I blast out some random furry-laden lyrics. Perhaps that is why I didn’t win, but otherwise, I wouldn’t have been able to write lyrics. Lyric writing is not my strong suit. So, for these lyrics to have come out as fluidly as they did, I had no choice but to go with it because it is rare for me to think of lyrics. And, honestly, I am still proud of how this song turned out! Furry cringe or not! I even tried going back after the contest ended and updating the song to make it sound better, but I couldn’t think of anything to change. I think I just changed the mix a little bit, but with how much effort I put into the song initially, it still hold up, personally.
