We are looking at the Pokémon originally called 'Orphan' and whose Japanese name, Karakara, is the onomatopoeia for rattling bones. Can you really blame Cubone for being so sad? Poor fellow.

My theory is the female Marowak dies when laying an egg, but that's the only way I can think of for a Cubone to be born an orphan..

Marowak was originally meant to evolve into Kangaskhan, but this was removed and put at Pokédex entry 000, hence a missing number, Missingno. I believe it goes something like this, anyway.
