A little pose I made to experiment with FX. he sparks could use some work, but I like how the dust comes off the feet.
Also added the car paint Mental Ray shader to the armor to give it more shine and reflection. Took me a little while to figure out how to get the transparent parts to work, but it came out really nice.

Everything is set up on a grid so there are coordinates to go by and you need to keep the scale of the scene in mind when it calculates things like lights and reflections, but the nice thing if you aren't very math inclined (like me) is all you have to do is render the scene, adjust a slider here and there and render again. Lot of trial and error, but you can see the results.
But like I said you could set everything up by code if that is how you think. When I was in school we had one class that was all about creating a model and animating it strictly from code. That's one of the great things about a lot of 3D packages: there are a dozen different ways to complete one task and the one you end up using usually depends on your own personal preference.
Now as per my artwork, I usually just try and make everything the size of my desktop (1920x1200) just so I can use it as wallpaper. :)
