From a history, not so long ago,
From a world, not so far below,
That brought with it a simple meal,
To bring the hungry people zeal. A nation's heritage from the east,
The one that was remembered as a beast,
That spread terror with a saber,
To the Balkan world, a neighbor. Its rule past still existent,
With its culture still persistent,
Remembered by a simple dish,
That swam to us like a fish. Now eaten by all – old and youth,
To feed the hungry, grease a tooth,
To help its neighbor in trouble,
And to leave a shine on one's stubble. Meat, cabbage, potato, cheese,
Just a few with which one can please,
A hungry stomach that desires,
And for a traditional dish, it aspires.
