i need to move my e-mail messages, how do i do that?

how do i get all my e-mails onto my new computer and into the new e-mail software?
basically i think i need a way to save the e-mails (there are like 10 000 of them) and then import them into the new program (i'm thinking i should download it to the new one). how do i do that? i'm using netscape messenger and i want to keep on doing so. i looked in the netscape help-section but all it talks about are how to import address books and e-mails from other email software.
any help would be tremendously appreciated.
