In this work, Yoshi Sodeoka approaches mathematics not just as a system of logic, but as a framework that shapes perception. The piece explores the human tendency to recognize patterns in nature, whether they are inherent or projected. These patterns begin to influence how reality is interpreted, blurring the line between observation and construction. Moving through a range of visual systems, spirals related to the golden ratio, weather-like flows, insect behavior, and bird murmurations, the video resists clear explanation. Instead, it exists between simulation and observation, where structure and chaos coexist. Sodeoka’s work reflects an ongoing interest in perception itself, asking how much of what we see is discovered, and how much is created by the mind interpreting it. accompanying the exhibition explore his concept of “positive illusory space” using contemporary digital media. Referring to Fangor’s fascination with movement and space, which constituted the basis for his work in 1961–1973 and for optical art as such, the show introduces the context of our perception of space in the age of multimedia art. “Contemporary painting should correspond to the contemporary concept of space. Today the mystery is located elsewhere than in the past. Today there is no contrast between man as a closed, finite personality and the finite and closed construction of a painting. Construed in this way, man and painting have little to say to each other. It seems to me that today more than ever the individual is aware of his dependence on the environment and the relativity of his position. I am interested in how to make art in the face of these changes.[1]” Fangor’s frequent references to space-time (internal and external, or real and illusory) have now been updated to include digital and virtual space, accessible through an immersive experience composed of animations that relate to the featured paintings. space. A decade of sun footage, always centered in the frame, is projected onto a wall marked with a golden ratio grid and mathematical notes. These precise lines mix with loose hand-drawn marks that feel casual and graffiti-like. The geometry and the drawing overlap, creating a quiet tension between calculation and improvisation. Moving images of sky and birds appear on separate digital surfaces in the room and form a scattered, multi-layered field of imagery. Each element holds its own presence while still contributing to one continuous environment where measured systems, observational footage, and spontaneous drawing meet. The installation reveals the types of layers that usually remain hidden inside a screen.
