I'm moving!

9th. May, 2009 | 12:52 am

Moving journals, that is...not houses. I've been living in the same house for my entire life, so I don't really see that changing in the immediate future (but one day, yes!). You can find me at:

calculare

Frankly this journal is just sprawling. I've been avoiding it for that reason, and I think it's time for a new start, somewhere with a little less baggage. It will remain here as a testament to everything I've been through with it, but essentially there won't be any more new posts after this.

If you'd like to follow my more personal entries on the new journal, please comment so that I can add you back! :)
If you'd like to just follow my art, add me without leaving a comment.

173 dead. Possible rise to 230.

10th. Feb, 2009 | 08:59 am

Authorities fear the numbers of deaths from the Black Saturday bushfires could spiral to 230, as John Brumby called a royal commission into the devastating blazes and police hunted arsonists, labelled mass murderers by Kevin Rudd.

As the army was brought in to assist exhausted police in their search for more victims and help firefighters who continued to battle blazes threatening townships in northeast Victoria last night, federal and state leaders warned Australians to brace themselves for the official death toll of 173 to rise.

Describing the fire-affected regions as "hell on earth", the Victorian Premier said the royal commission would scrutinise all aspects of how the state fights fires and prepares for them, including the policy of encouraging fit and able residents to defend their properties.

"Whatever is necessary to examine will be examined so that the lessons can be learned and we can put in place for the community all of the policies, the resources, the stocks that we need to make sure that we never see this again," he said.

"Tragically, we will have more deaths later this week."

Death toll rises to 84.

9th. Feb, 2009 | 11:13 am

"Australia has witnessed its greatest natural disaster. Worse than Black Friday. Worse than Ash Wednesday. Only in wartime has the toll of dead and wounded been greater."

"The number of dead may rise even further as blazes continue to ravage the state with more than 200,000 hectares affected as 3000 firefighters struggle to contain seven major firefronts. At least 640 homes have been destroyed.

The largest firefront is in the Kinglake area, where more than 120,000 hectares have been burnt and at least 12 people have been killed. More than 80,000 hectares have been burnt in Gippsland."

"Almost half of Victoria may be declared a crime scene, with arsonists believed responsible for several of the fires. Police said an ofender implicated in the fatal fires could be charged with the offence of arson causing death, a crime with a maximum penalty of 25 years in gaol."

50 confirmed dead in Victorian bushfire disaster. Further casualtie expected.

8th. Feb, 2009 | 05:03 pm

In what is considered to be Victoria's worst bushfires (and natural disaster) since the Ash Wednesday fires in 1983 (in which 47 people in Victoria died), 50 people are confirmed dead. It could be days until the final deathtoll is realised, including local residents, firefighters, and those who suffered burns from the fires. At least 80 people are in hospitals with burns, with 3 not expected to last the night.

Mostly feet things.

8th. Feb, 2009 | 12:39 pm

I spent last Thursday and Saturday standing on my feet (what else?) for 8 hours straight. While this may not seem like a particularly long time in general, it can be when you're used to doing so while moving around, or if you spend a lot of the rest of your time in a computer chair processing photographs. I was busy packing "O Week" (Orientation Week, for universities) goodie bags to help out one of my sister's friends, Ana.

My poor feet.Collapse )

Then yesterday, I found myself contemplating buying an AU$600.00 pair of boots. Somebody slap some sense into me, please? I also found myself desiring these, far cheaper, boots...but it turns out that they're impossible to find in my size in Australia. Curse our isolation! I really should move to somewhere that is always cold, so I'd have every reason to wear glorious pairs of boots, rather than wedges that just cause me pain.

Speaking of cold climes, the lovely Rosie (as to how I know her: we were in the same year group at our high school) is currently in Toronto, Canada, enjoying the weather there. She's a fashion aficionado, and went so far as to make a Chanel 2.55 bag out of snow! You must go look. Spiffy, neh?

Ooh!

Thank you, animotus, for the beautiful card!

I am now absolutely intrigued by the work of Tamara de Lempicka. The shadows, form and colours are just incredible. Below on the left is the stunning artwork that graces the card animotus kindly sent me, and on the right an (incomplete)portrait of her husband just prior to their divorce.

Red, black and white is one of my favourite colour schemes, so I adore this card. Thank you! *hugs*

(The neighbours did, indeed, have the card in stack of our mail! *sigh*)

Corey Arnold

18th. Jan, 2009 | 09:23 am

A photographer and Alaskan crab fisherman, Corey Arnold is working on a life-long project titled "Fish-work", which is a portrait of the modern commercial fisherman. Six years of his life have been spent photographing the crab fisherman in the Bering Sea, and grants will see him working to photograph fisherman from Norway to Alaska to Russia. The rest of the year is packed with travel, gallery exhibitions, magazine and ad photography assignments with a bit of backyard gardening, cat maintenance, and skateboarding in Portland, Oregon.

Arnold says: "It all started with my personality as a kid: I was crazy about exploring, travelling, and hanging out with animals. Well, killing and dissecting animals like birds, rabbits, squirrels, lizards, and especially sea creatures. I wanted to know how everything in the world looked on the inside and out, I was a curious and brutal little feller. Meanwhile my dad was a sport fishing addict. We would go fishing in the waters off of California nearly every weekend and I’d be surfing during the days in between. So in a way, I grew up on the sea."

Read an interview with Arnold, or check out his homepage for more images.
