A diversion

Hello! Merry THING! Happy THING! Fuck off, TWO THOUSAND AND NINE, you shitfuck of a year.

So yeah... since I last posted, I got a job. It's depressing and menial and too many people I work with care who wins the X Factor, but I had a good time at the Ecksmas party until I woke up and then threw up a bit. But I made it to the toilet, so that story has a happy ending.

Dad stayed in Spain for the holidays so I ended up at James and Helen's. Sadly, New Super Mario Bros Wii didn't arrive but Helen had bought him Lego Indy 2 so we spent a lot of time doing that. A lot more time than intended because James wiped the save file. Scotland was rather pretty all over, being somewhat COVERED in snow. James rode around the place on a mini-tractor so that kept him happy.

I bought a 360. If you have one, Hoggatron's my gamertag btw. So far I've played Saint's Row 2 (violence, misogyny and racism HOORAY) and Mirror's Edge (incredibly weak story and cheap animation for cut scenes but lovely aesthetic and gameplay). I've go the next week off so I'm going to work through: Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (shooty shooty bang bang), Bioshock (like System Shock but we're all scared of the future now, right?) and Dead Space (space zombies).

Speaking of Dead Space, I played the prequel on the Wii: Dead Space Extraction. It's one of those games dsky doesn't believe in, a wii game with violence and swears. It's a good rail shooter with a solid plot.

I got GTA: Chinatown Wars a week or so ago from a secretive Santa and I've spent quite a bit of time dealing drugs. It's kind of halfway between GTAs 1&2 and GTAs 3 onwards, so... sort of top down? I have mostly avoided the actual missions and just raced around from dealer to dealer, buying low and selling high. Why isn't there Elite on the DS or something?

iPhone: Canabalt, Spider and Peggle. All awesome things.

WoW had a big update. The Dungeon Finder is totally ace. I mark myself down as DPS only, toddle off to do something else then I get magically teleported to the dungeon, efficiently murder things with people I'll never talk to again and then get dumped back to what I was doing. It's probably the best ever change for folks like me (effectively guildless), allowing me to see all the heroics I could not be arsed waiting around for, desperately trying to find someone willing to heal. I might even lrn2tank all over again.

So are you calling it two thousand and ten or twenty ten?

Good news everyone!

IGN: Now… I don't want to get this one wrong, but there's something going on with Friend Codes this time around, right? Or should I say "not" going on with friend codes?

Karthik: Yes. No in-game Friend Codes!

For GH5, we've implemented support for your global Wii Friend Codes. If you've got friends in your Wii address book, they'll automatically be added to your friends list in game, so you can easily connect up with them in online multiplayer games. It's much easier to maintain a single list of friends on your Wii that you only have to enter once and use that address book directly in-game for invites, etc.
Well, it's about goddamn time. It's how I originally though the friends code system was going to work.

Also COD:MW1 is coming to the Wii, released when MW2 comes out for the HD consoles. I can the reasons for doing it and I'm interested in the title but I can't help but think there'll be some consumer confusion.

I am alive but not very

Women 'fight off disease better'

AH-FUCKING-HA! You see there is reason why I've been whiny and pathetic and lifeless this week. Forget Swine Flu, MAN FLU is the real danger. I caught it off Dan when I went to the House of Rassilon at the weekend. In an old skool way, I drank a fair bit, talked nonsense and then fell asleep somewhere uncomfortable.

Anna has so far not contracted my swine flu. However, she does have a serious case of HOGG FEVER. Ithankyew.

The weekend before that 'twas Sci-Fi London where I saw the usual mix of short films and long. Unfortunately Louis went a bit mad with the shorts this year meaning there was Shorts Programme 1 AND 2, Long Shorts/Short Longs and a special on shorts from Israel. The Focus On Israel was off to one side (kind of) as they want to start doing this every year (next time: Poland!) which was fine. The shorts themself were FUCKING DEPRESSING. The cheeriest one was about the Grim Reaper. As for the rest, I think they've have been better off dropping the shit ones. Anyway the audience award winner was The Day The Robots Woke Up, a lovely little stop-motion, 50s robots, rhyming kids voiceover thing. Sadly they don't seem to have done the thing of getting them all online yet. I saw longer films too. A low budget sort of time paradox thing which was alright and also THE AMAZING RECON 2023. Like the other Recon films they are the best and worst things to ever come out of Canadia. It's like a 16 year old had just watched Starship Troopers and some porn and then was given a camera.

Oh and we came third in the quiz. Dave Green of NTK and Tom Hunter of the Clarke Award dance for the amusement of the audience and then were given X-Boxes. We got a kite that didn't fly.

50 years of Italian covers for translated SF.

Robot Wars + Scrapheap Challenge = WEAPONIZERS. Although thinking about it, it's a bit more like when B.A. modified the van.

Maple Bacon lollipops.

Rolling at a constant speed, in a straight line, Tweenbots have a destination displayed on a flag, and rely on people they meet to read this flag and to aim them in the right direction to reach their goal.
Every single one has made it!

Why would an adult own Animal Crossing? Only one reason according to a yank cyber-cop. THEY'RE TOTALLY PAEDOS.

Crap. Time to offload my DS copy.

TGIRND?

View Poll: #1364783

Luckily it's not enforced wackiness here. We get a casual friday if we pay £2 and there's a silent auction with unclear rules. But it's for a bottle of brandy. WOO COMEDY.

Internet shopping might cut down on my unfortunate chocolate milk habit I developed over the last few months. Seriously, it's 2 for £2 in Tesco and Sainsbury and I drink a litre in about two minutes. No wonder I'm such a tubby bastard. Still, I can beat this addiction. Clean for almost a month now.

Have fallen out of love with the idea of getting a 360. House of the Dead: Overkill is amazing though.

Dad's coming down for the weekend so that'll be nice. Hopefully.

Thanks for all the messages of condolence and offers of help. Briefly back down home for now then back up tomorrow for the funeral Wednesday. Mostly distracting myself with things of little to no consequence. Which I've already got loads of, so yay!

But not enough. Still very tempted by a 360. Is it a good idea when I don't have a HD telly? HMV and GAME are offering bundles of the Premium with extra controller (Lal, I've still got yours btw), Lego Indy, Kung Fu Panda (guess I'll trade) and then a choice of either Halo 3, Fable 2 or GoW 2 for about the same price. I keep dithering about it all, weighing the pros and cons, checking around for better deals. Probably one of the most satisfying bits of shopping for nerd stuff!
