The recent hd_erised fic The Claiming of Grimmauld Place involves a sentient!Grimmauld Place as a plot device. Enjoyment of this fic inspired several people on the Drarry Discord server to come up with a list of fics with similar themes.

LDWS stands for the Last Drabble Writer Standing, and is hosted by slythindor100.

How it works: Participants write drabbles and compete against one another in a round. There will be a different prompt every week, and each week readers vote on which drabble they liked the best and which drabble they liked the least. One or two writers are eliminated each week, and one writer is declared the winner of the week. Eliminations continue until the Grand Finale, when the finalists compete for top honours.

It's all in good fun, no pressure! But more participants makes for a better fest!

I so enjoyed helping mod the hd_remix fest again this year. The hd_remix fest is one of my favorites in the fandom - I love the idea of authors writing fanfic of other fanfic. Here are some recs from the fest:

This art is BEYOND stunning and hauntingly beautiful. I love the way the colors transition from one side to the other, and how the first panel has more color and "life" than the last two. Honestly, these images could be framed and put on the wall without a single change.

Summary: In which Pansy has a crush and needs Draco's help, Draco has a crush but staunchly refuses to admit it, Potter might have a crush, but is as infuriating as always, and no one knows what the hell Wealsey is thinking--likely not even himself.

This was such a great remix! I definitely loved seeing the Harry/Draco side of this story, and the author perfectly wove in all the happenings in the original and showed us how they got there, and how the misunderstandings could multiply. So entertaining!
Everything is super cute and fun, (even the summary which really sums it all up perfectly!) and we see all of the characters haplessly dancing around what they each really want. But the best part is the kiss, oh! their kiss is SO HOT. Even though the sex is offscreen, the UST absolutely sizzles.
And the banter is top notch too :)

Absolutely charming and fun! I love veritaserum fics so much, and this one had all of the embarrassment and awkward confessions that I love about it, plus terrific funny dialogue too.
I loved so many lines, but maybe this one especially:
“Ginny asked you to roofie a set of buns named after a religious execution for her non-denominational party?”

Beautifully told and lovely. Amazing how you can feel so much emotion in just this short piece. Even though it's a story of grief, there's still a hopefulness and sense of love that pervades it. So good.
I also really appreciated that this remix introduced me to the original story by persephoneapple which I hadn't read before, and was a great find.

I enjoyed this so much! Very fun and amusingly sexy. And the author really captured the feeling of the type of scatterbrained-sex-addled thoughts a 19-year-old might have, and how they don't let themselves worry too much about consequences :)
I especially enjoyed Harry and Draco's aborted argument about Antarctica, and how Harry gave in in part because of sexual frustration :) Seeing this all play out from Harry's side was particularly funny.

This was really delightful! I love how the author created a whole story with just a series of short vignettes - I really fit the mood of Khalulu's original drabble that way.
I think this is probably my favorite line:

This remix is so in tune with the original work, and yet also adds to it in a meaningful and important way.
I loved the dream sequences, which showed the reader how lost Harry was feeling, and how the mirror was prompting him to ask the right questions - so cool!
This was just a really lovely glimpse into characters we all wanted to know more about and a great showcase into Harry's state of mind.

A few years ago I was reading through faithwood's backlist and came across Never Have I Ever on AO3. Her A/N mentioned that it had been "written for the 1 word prompt Comment Fest for the prompt shots." So me being me, I kept a record of that fest and who had written for it and noted that I had enjoyed oakstone730's fic :)

So when I decided that she should get a remix for the 2017 hd_remix fest too (since she had so graciously pinch-hit for us) a drabble was just what I was looking for, and I knew just where to find one!

Concrit is welcome for this. Seriously, this is only my second fic, and I really don't mind advice on how to write better. You can send me a PM or comment below, and so long as your comments are constructive my feelings won't be hurt at all. Oh, and if I got any British-isms wrong I definitely want to know! Using language right is really important to me, so please do tell me if something is off.

Nerdy linguistics discussion on tumblr

Yesterday I got into a lively discussion with another tumblr user on the proper interpretation of one of Bucky's lines in Captain America: The First Avenger.

The line in question goes like this:

“Hell, no. That little guy from Brooklyn who was too dumb not to run away from a fight, I’m following him.”

The original poster thought this line was illogical, while I thought it made perfect sense.

This engendered a lot of back and forth debate!

Yesterday I posted a list of all the people I knew from the HP fandom on LJ who were participating in the Fandom Trumps Hate charity auction. While Fandom Trumps Hate is hosted on tumblr, I didn't make it clear that you don't need to be on tumblr or have a tumblr account to bid! (thanks to pir8fancier for bringing this to my attention ♥)

So just to clarify, all the bidding takes place using a google form/spreadsheet that's not on tumblr, just linked to from there.

The links you need are found on each participant's contributor page (which I posted a list of links to yesterday). Take my page for example. If you click that link it will take you to a tumblr post with details of the auction I'm listing. There's a lot of verbiage, but the relevant thing is the two links near the bottom of the post where it says step1 and step 2 (copy pasting here for convenience):

There are over 500 people offering services for the Fandom Trumps Hate auction which is awesome, if a little overwhelming! Even just looking through the "fandom: Harry Potter" tag brings up what seems like 100 pages.

But for some of those, the creators have HP as a secondary or tertiary fandom, or say that they don't write Drarry. So I decided to sift through the offerings to find people I knew.

What is Fandom Trumps Hate?
FTH is an online auction of fanworks, with the proceeds going to charities (see list below).

Why Fandom Trumps Hate?
Because a lot of us are angry, depressed, and downright terrified by the recent election of a man who has consistently vilified/insulted/threatened women, POC, LGBTQIA, immigrants, Muslims, Jews, persons with disabilities, and pretty much everyone else. Fandom, at its best, is about building communities, and we’d like our communities to send a message of love by raising money for charities working to protect others.

How does it work?
Creators will sign up to offer their work at auction. The winner will donate their winning bid amount to one of the charities listed below, then send the creator email proof of their charitable donation. Once we know you’ve donated, the creator will get to work on your item! If you’ve seen previous auctions to benefit AO3 or Haiti, it’s kind of like that.

When is it happening?

Fic recs from HD Erised 2016

Great year for the hd_erised fest as usual! Here are some fics I highly recommend:

Written on the Heart by who_la_hoop ( NC-17 | 113,000 ) 31-Dec-2016
Summary: Harry doesn’t mind that so many Slytherins from his year have returned to finish their NEWTs, really he doesn’t. It’s just – do they have to be so friendly? He’s not prejudiced, really he’s not. It’s just – they’ve got to be up to something, right? Unnerved by the attention he’s attracting from everyone – the Slytherins are the least of it, to be fair – and struggling with a raft of changes to Hogwarts itself, Harry wishes he could be happy that one constant remains: Draco Malfoy really fucking hates him.
When he’s hit by an illegal love-spell though, Harry finds he has more to worry about than whether or not Blaise Zabini actually wants to be his friend. For if everyone affected has been blessed – or cursed, by the look on Malfoy’s face – with a magical tattoo revealing the name of their soulmate, what does it mean that Harry’s skin remains completely bare?

This fic hits all of my sweet spots: 8th year, soulmark tattoos, 113K and NC-17 \o/ I thought I'd died and gone to heaven when this posted! And it lived up to all of my hopes :) It was fantastic and beautiful.
I loved this take on the soulmark trope. Draco's mark *blossoming* for Harry is so wildly erotic! And the idea that it might not be reciprocated, or that Harry might not have a soulmate was heart-wrenching. Draco is so stoic and resigned about the whole thing, even though he's clearly pining away and his heart must be breaking into a hundred little pieces. And Harry, god Harry is so clueless but also so earnest and well-intentioned. I loved every moment of this, and only wish it could have gone on longer (because it was so good, not because it was lacking anything!)

Summary: Harry never expected to spend eighth year listening to Draco Malfoy wanking.

I so enjoyed this! I may be shallow, but I have to admit that I loved that this story didn't waste any time and got right into the sexual tension and the after-dark activities :) But even so it never felt gratuitous, and I adored how this was at heart a story of sexual awakening and exploration - of two young men who were new to things and still working out what they liked and wanted. The awkward intimacy was delicious.
And all of it was just beautifully written too, with natural dialogue that gives us glimpses of what all the characters have been up to without ever being info-dumpy. Harry's dawning realization that he likes Draco and wants to be with him is endearing, and I so appreciated how the misunderstanding that led to Harry almost hexing Nott and putting himself in the infirmary didn't feel overdone or stupid. Harry knew immediately that he had screwed up, and he wanted to fix it ASAP.
Also really loved the depiction of wandless magic and how seamlessless it was worked into the story. The whole thing was wonderful and rewarding to read.

Boom Clap (The Sound of My Heart) by femmequixotic and noeon ( NC-17 | 39,600 ) 20-Dec-2016
Summary: Post-war Hogwarts has been energized by its new teaching fellows program. Where once bitter enmity divided the wizarding community, Malfoy and Potter chummily patrol hallways together whilst Granger and Zabini seek lost parts of the castle at McGonagall’s behest and Chang supervises Quidditch when not lecturing in Charms. It’s a veritable wizarding utopia and life is predictable for the first time in years. Which is, of course, when everything blows apart as the result of a drunken dare and Malfoy’s life is ruined beyond his capacity to repair it. Ever. In a million years.

I loved everything about this story! Draco's pining was incredibly moving, and his distrust of Harry's interest entirely believable. And I was thrilled with all the fantastic tropes interwoven into this fic - party games, the room of requirement, and the Mirror of Erised! And each one felt completely fresh and important to this story, not just tacked on. Especially the Mirror of Erised - the way this reveal was worked in was *awesome*. So like everyone else, I backed up my LJ to DW. Trying out this cross-posting thing now.

So it seems like LJ "friends" = DW "circle" ? And after I ported over, I now have a bunch of open-IDs listed in my "circle". I thought that these would convert into their LJ-equivalents when people crossed over, but that doesn't seem to be happening?

Example: oakstone730 is an LJ friend. Last night I imported everything to DW and saw her name as an openID account in my circle. This morning I saw her post about moving to DW and officially "subscribed" to her DW account. And now I've got her listed as both her DW account and her openID account in my circle. Am I doing it wrong?

We have the weirdest Christmas Eve tradition

Something like 10 years ago, I was rooting around in the discount bin at some video store (or maybe Walmarts - who knows?) and came across a DVD of a Special Christmas Episode of Aardman's creature comforts:

I had no idea what this was, other than being by the creators of Wallace and Gromit and Chicken Run, which meant it had to be good, and it was only $1.99, so why not?

My kids were all like, "what even is this?" and I couldn't really answer, so I just said we should watch it and see. And oh my god, my husband and I were dying. Of course, back then, my kids were too little to really get it, but we all watch it together now every year, and it's so fun to see them laugh more and more the older they get.

It's even on youtube now so everyone can see it :)

No matter how cynical you might be about Christmas, I'm reasonably sure this will make you laugh. At least, so long as you enjoy hearing the "Twelve Days of Christmas" song get completely butchered and over-analyzed by random British citizens impersonated by stop-motion animals.

But trust me, it's hilarious.

I had no idea, really honestly no idea about the love meme that lokifan hosted last month. I wasn't checking my LJ at that time, and completely missed it.

I can't believe that you kind people made a thread for me anyway, considering I hadn't been around for nearly 8 months at that point. *wants to insert shamefaced emoji but doesn't know how*

It's so very sweet and lovely that anyone took the time to do that, and I'm deeply touched and grateful. Thank you so much anonymous posters. You really made my day.

(are we supposed to comment back on the thread? or not, because it's anonymous? I want to do the right thing!)

Fandom Trumps Hate is almost here!

What is it?
An online fanfic/fanart auction to benefit a variety of organizations helping populations targeted by Trump and his administration. (Such as the ACLU, Planned Parenthood, Trans Lifeline, and the National Immigrant Justice Center.)

How does it work?
Authors and artists will sign up to offer their work at auction. The winner will donate their winning bid amount to one of the charities listed below, then send the author/artist email proof of their charitable donation. Once we know you’ve donated, the author/artist will get to work on your item! If you’ve seen previous auctions to benefit AO3 or Haiti, it’s kind of like that.

When is it happening?
Dec 19: Author/artist signups open (also electoral college votes)
Dec 31: Author/artist signups close
Jan 12: Bidding opens
Jan 20: Bidding closes (and the new president is inaugurated)
Jan 31: Proof of donation due to your author/artist

If you write fic or create fanart, get ready to sign up!

Message anxiety, and oh hey, how've you been?

I've been away for a while, but tonight I decided to tackle my inbox which has been taunting me (142 messages, christ!) I've got serious inbox anxiety, and seeing that I had an avalanche of messages waiting for me actually made it harder for me to even attempt to look at them :/

But the weird thing is that easily 75% of the messages were simply LJ alerts of people's birthdays and whatnot. Apparently I've missed ALL the birthdays. Very sorry about that!

The other 25% of the messages were all nice comments on earlier entries, so as usual my anxiety was entirely unfounded, but there's no talking sense to it.

But even after going through it all, somehow or other there are still 2 unread messages somewhere in there which I CANNOT find. I went back though several pages, but I gave up after a while. So if I never responded to one of your messages, I'm also very sorry about that, and I don't know how to fix it.

The US election has gotten me seriously depressed (as if I needed any help with that!) but I've been venting as much of my anger and frustration as possible over on tumblr. Also calling my congressperson, but he's a moron and a Trump supporter, so it feels hopeless.

Hope everyone is doing well. I'm way behind on all reading too. I've mostly gotten sidetracked into the Stucky fandom, and as with most things I get into, I get majorly obsessed for an intense period of time and then I cool off again. I think I'm in a cooling-off period now.

Anyway, just thought I'd poke my head back in and say "hi".

This was a stunningly beautiful story. Seeing Harry through his departed mother's eyes is so unusual and unexpected, and yet I found it so very moving. Especially watching Lily work through her complex feelings of protectiveness, hurt, betrayal, and finally acceptance of Harry's relationship with Draco. There is so much depth here that I can't do it justice - you'll just have to read it. I really loved it. Fantastic remix.

I enjoyed this so much! The wry humor in this story immediately captivated me. I loved the perfect sense of each scene - brief but fully realized - and the excellent glimpses into the complicated and delicate conversational minefields they navigate. Lovely fic with great feels - and really not so very fluffy, despite the tags :)

Holy amazeballs this fic. This fic is the most fantastic backstory to the original. It starts out strongly Draco-centric in the best way, drawing the reader into his post-war life and dedication to his work. But when something disturbing starts happening to him, the only one Draco trusts to help him is Harry Potter. Even though they've barely spoken since the war, Harry decides the best way to help Draco without raising suspicions is for them to pretend to be in a relationship (of course!) Thus we are treated to the most amazing fake-relationship story ever, where Draco is trope-savvy enough to be worried about rogue mistletoe, and they're both falling ever deeper in love. What makes it so wonderful is that we are immersed in the slow build of their relationship over the course of many months, and nothing about it feels rushed. Do note that this is a remix however, so the ending doesn't quite tie everything up as neatly as it would otherwise - it's meant to flesh out the backstory of the original.
