We Remember…On December 25th

On Christmas day in 1978 the artist, Danielle Turiano, was born. At 3 lbs each, she was one of twin girls born to a passionate painter for a mother, and a dream-chasing writer / stockbroker, father. During the 20 years and 3 months Danielle was alive, she became a huge inspiration to many because of her altruistic voice, strong will, and natural ability to befriend and support others who were often considered outcasts. Needless to say, her death due to a tragic car accident on March 24, 1999 was a shock for family, friends, and a genuine loss to the art community.

She believed in universal, unconditional love and gave it willingly. She was unafraid of social norms, labels, and innately contributed to justice all around her. She was a gifted and skilled artist with a raw passion and love for the arts at a very early age. Today we remember her for her perseverance; unwavering strength; integrity; the inspiration she left in her wake; her constant acceptance of others and encouragement; her sincerity; her ART.

Snapping Twig was created in-part to nurture her memory and continue her inspiration.

On this Christmas day, Danielle Turiano, would be thirty-six years old.

Submission Guidelines: You Write Them

I am going to bag the submission guidelines – sorta. I don’t know if it’s being a writer who has spent years trying to get back to my creative self before I cared or even knew what good writing is, or might be, but the submission guidelines just aren’t jiving with our message – the whole purpose of what this site is for and exists to nurture.

Twig is about the space where we aren’t trying to measure up and where we can go back to the roots of that passion that makes the love of writing or creating art so fan-f’n-tastic. That does not mean we do not have any guidelines at all, they still apply – I really just do not want the impression to be that the first thing one should do is look at them. Also it does not mean we accept any work that is sent our way. On the contrary, we do not, though this editor happens to be especially driven to encourage those unpublished works and their creators in a way that hardly compares to the average rejection letter (thank you very much). Do You Free-Write?

A recent article published by Every Writer’s Resource on the benefits of free-writing is worth checking out. The write-up includes some helpful tips and uses for writers that offer some really good ideas for getting started. If you don’t do it, this read may cause you to reconsider what it can do to help stir up your own untapped creative sources.

By the way, hopefully you are already subscribed to EWR and if you are a writer who isn’t, you’ll want to check out their expanding database of literary magazines and book publishers. Just another killer resource to put in your back pocket…

Where We’ve Been

For a long time Snapping Twig has been open to accepting creative work from outside contributors though we have never officially pushed a call for on-going submissions. As some readers here may already know, this site was built to encourage creative expression, without boundaries while preserving the memory of a young artist whose influence helped infuse a passion for what we do. When we’re not here sharing poetry, art, and other inspirations, we are also involved in other publishing projects as editor / publisher of small press, as well as working on our own writing when we can.

No Boundaries

Because we love being a part of the creative community, when this blog was started I decided I wanted to eventually encourage other writers and artists to get involved, but I wanted this space to be more of a place to breathe as opposed to one of hundreds of literary magazines looking for very specific work, or a lot of narrow conditions that limits the work that is accepted. It isn’t a criticism, it is just a fact that a good deal of politics exists in the publishing world. It is after-all a very competitive one. I completely support those and all spaces that give artists and writers the opportunity to be read. That is I adore them regardless of how politically motivated they are or not. They all give us the same opportunity, and I have the greatest respect for the love and purpose those who help make that opportunity possible must have in order to provide it to us. I just wanted this space to really tribute art and contribute to its expression, and thus expand beyond itself – push those boundaries. Continue reading

Vignette No.1

This is an excerpt or vignette I’ve been working on from a story that may potentially become a novel if I ever take it further. It’s a story about two people and their own personal struggle with the past and the complex dynamics of human desire that separates them from the future. I don’t often dabble in fiction, mostly because I don’t think I have the discipline for it, so if you care to take a look, any feedback will be greatly appreciated… Continue reading
