<lj:music>Final Fantasy XI</lj:music>

No spoilers here! I promise.

I'm having trouble focusing on FF XIII. I'm not sure if it's because life is so hectic lately and only recently settled into a nice calm, or if it's the game itself. I'm usually not one to complain about games being linear, but for some reason all I feel like I'm doing in this game right now is trudging along, battle after battle, waiting for the tiny moments of exposition between, and then it's right back to battle after battle. Sigh.

At least the pretty of it is keeping me entertained. I think I'm just waiting for when I finally have a whole party and a little more freedom to roam, and it seems like that's a long time coming.

That may be why the linear style and the constant battling bothers me in this game as opposed to like FF X, which functioned in just about the same exact way. At least in that one, I had a whole party by the time I reached Luca, and I already knew how to play the whole game easily. I'm in the mid-chapters already, and the game is still throwing tutorials at me. It's only a 13 chapter game! Shouldn't all of this be covered in the first two or so chapters?

    <lj:music>Rihanna - Take a Bow</lj:music>

Playing Assassin's Creed II. Here's the thing about this series. I suck something fierce at stealth and in general I pretty much hate the combat and the controls. I think what keeps me playing the games is that I usually find the characters endearing, the overall story intriguing enough to keep me interested, and there really is something incredibly fun about sneaking up on people and assassinating them.

I'm up to DNA Sequence 6 or 7, I can't remember exactly, but I just finally had my first break from the Animus if that helps. About five minutes into playing the game, I fired off at text to cairea that I do believe said something like, "This is Ezio? I already dislike him." He's grown on me a little more since the beginning of the game when he was running around and being a pompous ass, but I still think Altair embodies what it means to be a bad ass assassin so much more. But Ezio still has room to grow. I'm forgiving him a little more.

Aside from my wary reaction to Ezio, the setting is stunning and the music is fantastic, and I can't begin to say how much I love not going to the same cities and doing the same saving the citizen quest over and over again. Very glad to have more diversity in that area.

However, I was more or less trudging along in the game until I discovered my first Truth sequence, and now I'm completely fascinated and hooked by where the story is going. I even enjoy those obnoxious puzzles, though one of them had me staring at the screen for half an hour in rage.

The fact that I just had some weird dream sequence and got to run around as Altair for a little bit makes me happy, too. And I pretty much had the same reaction as Desmond when Altair and Maria started making out on the tower. Intriguing!

Other points of note: tomb raiding and finding dead assassins is fun, I'm very glad Altair has been mentioned in the game and not tossed to the side like some heroes are in sequels, Leonardo da Vinci is adorable, and while I don't understand the point of dyeing my clothes, I keep doing it to see what pretty colors I can put on Ezio.

Also, unrelated, but I watched the first six episodes of Glee and it is all kinds of awesome. ♥

The latest Penny Arcade comic basically summarizes my whole life in retail.

<lj:music>Jealous Sound - For Once in Your Life</lj:music>

Main dislike over Dragon Age thus far is I am playing a male character, and of my potential romance choices one is boring and has a bizarre, impossible to place accent but she sounds incredibly like the Asian character in Metal Gear Solid that was always quoting proverbs at me instead of doing anything useful. The other is a heartless shrew of a witch who disapproves of everything I say and do, and it's not small, tiny disapprovals, like -1 point or -5 points here and there, no, it's always -10 and it happens all the time. Naturally, I find her more interesting than the latter, but she's more likely to castrate my male hero than let him woo her.

As a result, I have amazing chemistry right now with Alistair, who just admitted to me he is a virgin, so for solidarity I told him I was, too. ♥ Alas, I somehow doubt that same-sex pairings will be allowed, or else I could have had him in bed an hour ago.

Other than that, I find the graphics to be incredibly pathetic compared to the likes of other games being released nowadays, and especially compared to Mass Effect, but admittedly I'm not really paying that much attention to it (that could have a lot do with the fact none of the areas have astounded me with 'oooh, ahh' moments). It plays more like an online game, so the graphics appeal more to that style, which I should hate due to my hate of online games as a whole, but no. I find it incredibly addicting and I've played about 10 hours in just the past day alone.

It's also nice to have something new and distracting to do since real life is sucking so hardcore lately. Sigh. XD

I randomly started up my game of Prince of Persia on my 360 earlier today, a fact I blame on halcyonjazz and always making me remember how very much I love that game. And I played through the part where I think I absolutely fell in love with the game for the first time.

For those of you that have played it, I'm talking about when you finally face and defeat the Concubine for the last time. The illusions she conjures of Elika, and the way the Prince has to break the illlusions... Eee, is all I can say. There's so much I could say about that whole sequence (and the Concubine in general and her ultimate greatness for being such a fantastic bitch) but I could probably go on for days.

Incidentally, it made me realize I'd like to find some Prince of Persia artwork, as my new goal in life is to decorate the walls of my apartment with framed artwork dedicated to some of my favorite games... I already have BioShock covered (in two freaking awesome pieces) and a smaller Final Fantasy VII piece, and technically a Devil May Cry piece, though it's actually art by the artist of VG Cats that I got at a convention.

... but Prince of Persia art is so hard to find, and I'd feel bad stealing shit from DeviantArt.

<strike>not like I have that much wall space anyhow</strike>

I also really want to watch Avatar again. As I'm a favorite of the hack to pieces and ask questions later style of fighting (brute force over strategy, in all my RPGs) I don't do well with any of the long ranged fighters, but oddly enough I've gotten much better at making good use of Firion's both long and short range attacks. But I do better with Cloud and surprisingly I can clear the Arcade pretty well with Zidane.
- Graphics are fantastic and I love all the battle maps taking from the original games. I especially love the Magitek Research Facility. ♥ I also like the ability to get alternate outfits for the characters, but Cecil's is kind of boring (they just changed the blue to red) and Firion's makes me giggle at how weird his hair gets.
- Another thing I hate: DP. I'm lucky to clear a stage with 1 DP left over, but more often than not with -1 DP or at some points when I really suck, -2.

- Okay, this dialogue... Is the original game this silly, or did it just translate that badly? To the credit of the voice actors, they act it very well, but half the things they say I kind of wonder if most of them were standing there in the recording booth going, "Do I really have to say that?" All the talk about light, darkness, and wild roses. lol. It's just so... it's like Tetsuya Nomura just took all his weird obsessions with those things and put them into full overdrive mode for this game.
- I love Steve Burton as Cloud, I think his voice is perfect, but what is up with his odd William Shatner speech patterns? He has this strange, pregnant pauses between words that don't actually require them. What?
- I think Yuri Lowenthal as Cecil got the worst for the cliche, silly dialogue, but I've only played through 2 story arcs and almost finished a 3rd at this point. It could very well get worse!
- I thought Squall was David Boreanz again. Alas, he is not. But the fact GOLIATH from GARGOYLES is Chaos is squeeeeee. ♥

- And onto the fandom aspects, Firion has chemistry with EVERYONE in this game. I foresee much slash featuring him in the future, not that I particularly mind. He's growing on me. He seems like such a blind dip the way he talks to everyone. He has no idea what fan girls will do to him in fandom. Kekeke.
- I never jumped on that whole Leon x Cloud/Cloud x Leon thing from Kingdom Hearts and then suddenly, for no reason, there's this random little scene of Tidus running after Cloud and Squall and being like hey hey heeeeeeey guys, and both of them are completely ignoring him. For some reason, that little scene made me go, "I could totally see those two." (And I generally don't slash Squall, because he and Rinoa are adorable -- yes, I like that pair, and I love that game.)
- The Emperor would totally be played by David Bowie in a movie.

Question: What sucks?

Answer: Ding ding ding! The ending of Assassin's Creed.

I have to admit, all in all, I kind of hated the game. Mainly because I am not good at the stealthy thing (thus why I never got very far in Metal Gear Solid) and I prefer the hacky-slashy (thank you, Devil May Cry and Prince of Persia). But as far as the story, characters, and overall concept of it, I liked it a whole lot. Gameplay can kiss my ass, is all. And the stupid ending definitely makes me want the sequel.

And apparently I have a new baby cousin as of two minutes ago. Well, my cousin has a baby, which I guess makes her my second cousin? Cool. <strike>with a horrible, horrible name; she is so doomed and she's only five minutes old</strike>
