  • Firefox 1.5, the first beta

    September 19, 2005
    browser, firefox, technology

Well, I’ve upgraded recently to the first beta of Firefox’ new version 1.5. So far, I seem to notice little difference (which is a good thing and a bad thing at the same time). It’s good, because that means the surfing experience of Joe Regular won’t change much. It’s bad, because that also means that if any new features were added, in my every day use so far I haven’t been able to find them.

What I did find however, was that after my upgrade to 1.5b1, most of my extensions are disabled due to apparent incompatibility. Though I suspect most are not incompatible at all, they’re not yet edited to actually support the new version number. Which is a shame.

The only true difference in this new version that I found is the layout of the preferences, with the main options laid out horizontally instead of vertically.

I’m sure there’s more but right now I can’t find it. The fact that Firefox keeps having a regular, solid browsing experience is a good thing but unfortunately there seems to be little new about this version of our beloved browser.

  • mod_rewrite saved my old RSS and Atom feeds

    September 19, 2005
    apache, leftontheweb, rss

After moving to Textpattern, I had one tiny little problem: Everyone that subscribed to my RSS and Atom feeds wouldn’t know about the change. Luckily, zeroK came to the rescue. He suggested to use mod_rewrite and even helped me compose the write mod_rewrite code for it:

    ??RewriteRule ^rss.xml$ /rss [R,L]??
    ??RewriteRule ^atom.xml$ /atom [R,L]??

I tried accessing rss.xml and it indeed gave me my new RSS, so if all is well, all you old Left on the Web subscribers should now see this new post! Come by and see what I’ve done with the site.

  • Hey, what’s this?

    cms, leftontheweb, pivot, textpattern

You might notice that something has changed here. Actually, quite a lot has changed. I’ve moved from Pivot to Textpattern, and in the process I obviously also moved to a whole different design. I’m now using the default installation of Green Marinee, though I am planning on changing some stuff in the near future to make it more to my liking. But even the basics are already to my liking ๐Ÿ™‚

Why did I move away from Pivot? Good question. First of all, because I like to try different CMS’es and weblog packages. Textpattern also seems to me to be a more complete CMS, which makes it easier to expand this site in the future. And last but not least, I recently had a problem with Pivot which caused me to temporarily panic as I thought I had lost all but three posts. It ended up being solved easily (by rebuilding the index file) but I thought to be on a slightly more safe side by moving to a MySQL based software package.

We’ll see how it works out. I definately have the idea that this move isn’t a bad one.

  • Stress

    September 13, 2005
    cms, leftontheweb, pivot, textpattern

I’m currently a bit stressed out. Trouble with a client while nearing the end of a project, no fun at all. I’ve had little time for fun.

I’ve done some digging and I suspect this site will soon be “re-done”. I have made the decision to move away from Pivot and towards Textpattern. Different reasons for that, with the main reason being a problem I recently had with Pivot where I for a minute was afraid I had lost all posts. It might just have been a glitch and was easily solved, but for now I’m moving this site away from Pivot.

Downside is that I will have to write my own converter for the move, since there is no Pivot -> Textpattern converter available right now. But that’s a nice little project to do once I’ve finished this damn project and hopefully solved the problems with the client.

  • Talk of the town

    cerf, google

News is spreading fast on the Internet, especially with news like this. Vinton Cerf, who is widely creditted with inventing TCP/IP, the protocol used for the Internet, joins the ranks of Google. Google just became a whole lot mightier. I say: wow. WOW.

  • Mambo -> Joomla!

    September 6, 2005
    cms, joomla, mambo

The old Mambo CMS has a new name. The developers of the old Mambo software had quit their work for Mambo after an argument over the Mambo Foundation that was started. Now, they have presented their new name: Joomla! I wonder where they got that name, it doesn’t sound very intelligent. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  • Saving time with LoudBlog

    August 26, 2005
    loudblog, podcast, software

I have been planning to do some sort of radio show for my website Electronic Music World for quite a while. One of my plans was to write a module for WebKoffer which handled this. But too little time and a bit of laziness always held me back. Yesterday, Chris Sisk pointed me towards LoudBlog, an open source PHP/MySQL weblog/CMS package that is meant especially for PodCasts (or AudioFeeds, if you don’t want to use the Apple term too much). This sounded like a good solution, especially since you can also link to third party sites that hold mp3’s, something that is quite useful in saving diskspace, especially with services like Archive.org and Scene.org. And yes, I am quite impressed with LoudBlog. It’s easy to install, and quite easy to manage your AudioFeed. Adding new files/posts is simple, and altering the layout to fit in with the rest of your site is also quite easy with the (XSLT-based?) template system. So yeah, I’m quite happy with it. Check it out at the Electronic Music World Radio.

  • OSX on x86

    apple, mac, osx

It is possible already. And here’s the proof. A step by step description of how to install your own OS X on your regular PC system (provided you have an Intel x86 CPU). Pretty cool! If only I have a second HD in my laptop ๐Ÿ˜‰

  • Bye Bye Big Man

If you’ve seen Big Fish, then you will remember the huge guy. That guy was Matthew McGrory. Unfortunately, he passed away, apparently of natural causes. He was only 32. ๐Ÿ™

    audioscrobbler

Today, the new AudioScrobbler will be launched. The temporary page they have up at the moment doesn’t really say anything yet. I’m really wonderingโ€ฆ will the new site be as good as I hope it to be? Will the technical trouble that have been bothering AudioScrobbler be over?
