Boosting the signal: Massage is Good

Posting this for my pal Liz who's not an online person these days...

Massage is Good: How to massage yourself and others without killing your hands.

Date: Saturday, September 18th 2010
When: 11 am potluck, 12 Noon Class starts (12-6pm)

What: This class is intended for anyone who would like to be able to learn or improve massage skills. Our primary equipment will be ourselves, ordinary
dining-room chairs, and the floor. The class is oriented mainly towards
massage without the use of specialized massage equipment, so we will be talking about how to work with what you have, and will make accommodations for people’s physical needs. We’ll be talking about how to make massage easier for the person doing the massage and more wonderful for the person receiving. We’ll demonstrate various strokes and techniques to reduce fatigue, and offer basic safety tips for both the massage giver and recipient. You will have time for hands-on supervised practice so that you can try out what you’ve learned and ask questions while you’re doing it.

Where: at Sidhehaven in Yelm (contact us for directions if you need them)

Bring: food (either for yourself or to share, but we think sharing is more fun)

(please do not bring anything with pork, as it is a pork free household.
Ingredient lists are much appreciated in pot-luck items so people will know what's in the food)

Wear: comfortable clothing in which you can move easily and through which it will be easy to massage.

How much: $35 for one person, $60 for two.

Spaces are still available but class size is limited. Please contact us to let us know if you’re planning to come. There are stairs to get into the building.
If this is likely to be an issue for you, please let us know.

Who to contact:
By Phone: Liz Anderson, LMP (206) 282-4784 By Email: Sarah Simon, LMP aphrodi@hotmail.com

Band busy-ness...

We've been busy - some of the best part of our days has been band stuff... I might post some other fun stuff separately, but the band stuff is pretty cool - the last couple of songs I've worked on have given me opportunities to do work I'm really proud of... both the harmonies I've written and the performances... plus I think the songs are just great; I'm really proud of my boy suddenlynaked for some awesome composition and lyrics... yay...

One of my current favorite bits might not make the album cause it's goofy - he did a funny intro-bit for the song "YES" that'll probably be an alternate version, won't be on the CD:
http://www.bonepoets.com/yesallfour.mp3

This saturday we'll be playing a fundraiser at Soul Food Books in Redmond; we're so close to being done, this'll be the last fund raiser for recording; it's so close I can taste it...

it's been a while...

I'm still here :-)

wow, it's been a busy summer - St. Crispy Fest was a fabulous big ass party - music, barter, potluck feasting, singing around the campfire, pancake breakfast, out in the trees and fresh air... big thanks to the folks at the Frog Ranch in Auburn; we'll probably do it again there next year...

then this last weekend was polycamp - I so needed that... a chance to sit and chat with friends I've not seen in way too long, flirting and some kinky whatnot with a delicious new friend, helping in the kitchen (dare I admit that I enjoyed running the Hobart?) - and the most amazing karaoke evar - those poly folk can really put it on...

and recording on the BPO album is going *well* - I'm so proud of my vocals on this album, I feel like I've sort of graduated a level... can't wait to be done with this one - but of course that also means finishing the cover - my first really serious watercolor, which is a bit intimidating... but I think I can pull it off - we'll see, eh?

so... running madly, between hiding my head in the sand and checking the fig tree... I am gonna make some serious figgy chutney this year, I am...

still buzzing...

really high energy show tonight - and what a wonderful audience response! The hall was tough; very echo-ey and "live" - it took a good part of the first set to get the sound to settle down, and it was still not perfect, but Jim really did wonders taming the room to a dull roar... he deserves a sainthood and a really easy next gig for his work tonight!

It was BIG FUN playing the new music; I sang lead for the *second* time tonight, and I think 'Smells like Rain' came off nicely; it's really starting to feel more natural to sing lead (smiling sheepishly) - and oh, it was fun! The other new song that really felt like it came off well was 'Pleasure of the Sky' - that was SO much fun to perform!! and the audience just leaped in with both feet and joined us in the air - no little thanks to the "St Crispy Dancers" - three beautiful women in short coctail dresses who leaped up beside the band to dance and lead the audience response... I so hope someone got film (or at least photos) of them... oh! I might have some myself - my camera was out in capable hands for the evening, I just remembered! I'll post them somewhere when I unearth the camera, it's in one of the cars...

and.. I think we're a rock band now...

Anyway - wow, what an evening - and we capped it all by heading over to the Night Kitchen downtown for our usual 'midnight breakfast after the show'... that place makes *serious* goodies... mmmm, I especially loved the fries dipped in homemade mustard (that was my favorite of the three sauces they came with) - and after, key lime pie... even my non-sweet-loving tongue was enthralled, enraptured - *that* was pie...

it's been a good night - and now it's morning - I should find some sleep now! just don't want to say... good night!

I'm learning web design in a rather awesome progam (Web Foundations Fast Track) at Cascadia Community College - and I'm on a team that will be redesigning the Everett Public Library website (eee!)... this is their site now: http://www.epls.org/ - it's *not* an online library, but has a catalog you can search of books you can check out online and pick up, information about events and services, that sort of thing.

Here are my questions and requests - for those of you who use public library websites (from either side, as librarians or as users or parents of users)- pick a couple questions from the list - don't feel you have to answer all of these :-)

- What do you see as the *main* purpose(s) of a public library website?
- What specific tasks or information would you go to a public library website to do?
- What do you think is too often missing from library websites (or missing from the Everett site in particular)?
- What do you think is the most useful tool/feature on a public library site?
- What do you find frustrating while using a library site?

- Please take a look at the Everett Public Library site, and note what works and doesn't work for you.

- Please suggest a couple of library sites that you think are great (functional and appealing) - and note what you like about them.

- if you'd be willing to help with usability testing (which won't happen for several weeks), email me at: sue at bonepoets dot com

Thanks for any feedback!

5 years ago today, we fell into love with two amazing people... I can't really believe it's been 5 years, but then it feels like longer than that; it's hard to remember a time when I didn't love my Ace and Eric. I'm so lucky; we're all so lucky -
I wish that everyone could have this, find a balance of personalities, a connection that is so ... right.

So. I breathe, I dream myself into the arms of my distant loves, I happily feel the arms of my great love who I get to see every day... I am grateful and *deeply* happy.

*LOVE*

zoom girl posts!

I've been alternately worrying too hard and running to fast to post lately, but we've got good things going on. Still no word (in the no-news-is-still-good-news sense) on the job opportunity with the Everett Police (hee!) - so I'm trying not to chew fingernails on that score.
In the world of Teh Bone Poets, I'm singing lead on at least one song (which is now recorded!) on the new CD - the song's called "Smells Like Rain"... (http://www.bonepoets.com/smellslikefinal.mp3) and I'm actually pleased with my performance, which is the most surprising part of the whole deal... and I'm deep into the sketching portion of creating a painting for the cover of Belladonna Smiles - and I'm Very Pleased so far, I'll post something when it's looking like something recognizable... AND I made a new Tshirt design - finally doing black shirts, and this will be screen printed on the front:

so.... is it obvious that most of the good stuff that's going on is band oriented...? heh... I'm so glad I've got that in my life right now... and my friends - I have the *BEST* friends, have I mentioned that lately?
ok... I zoom now - sketchsketchsketch, I think lettering tonight...

Washington Voters - in case you've not done the ballot yet...

People could easily miss an important vote because it's placed badly on the ballot. If you haven't voted yet, look it over carefully and be sure you don't miss I-1033 -

The I-1033 initiative vote is buried at the end of the first column below the voting instructions, all by itself and isolated from the rest of the ballot.

Tim Eyman's I-1033 poses a serious threat to Washington's economy and to the quality of life in our community. It couldn't come at a worse time. According to the Office of Financial Management, Eyman's initiative would slash state revenues by $5.9 billion over the next five years. Cities would lose $694 million and counties would lose $2.1 billion. That's billions of dollars taken away from education, health care, public safety, and other important services all across Washington.

Venison (notably, my brother does amazing canned venison)
2. Nettle tea
3. Huevos rancheros
4. Steak tartare (long before mad cow)
5. Crocodile (tasted surprisingly like pork)
6. Black pudding (not nearly as exciting as it sounds. really.)
7. Cheese fondue
8. Carp - this is one of the few common fish I'm pretty sure I've not had
9. Borscht (yummy spicy borscht, mmm)
10. Baba ghanoush
11. Calamari (this is great if the squid is really fresh, and lightly cooked)
12. Pho (mmmmm....that sounds good *NOW*)
13. PB&J sandwich
14. Aloo gobi
15. Hot dog from a street cart
16. Epoisses (that would be Epoisses de Bourgogneon, the cheese)
17. Black truffle (stumbled on some fresh to experiment with; they're lovely)
18. Fruit wine made from something other than grapes (blueberry Cabernet, mmm)
19. Steamed pork buns (char siu bao, hum bao!yum)
20. Pistachio ice cream
21. Heirloom tomatoes (grew my own once, they rocked)
22. Fresh wild berries (my favorite food ever)
23. Foie gras (a bit rich for me...)
24. Rice and beans
25. Brawn, or head cheese (not by choice! tongue is ok, though)
26. Raw Scotch Bonnet pepper (blow head off now)
27. Dulce de leche
28. Oysters (best time, picked them from the sea and steamed with garlic butter..wow)
29. Baklava
30. Bagna cauda (I've had very similar hot oil "fondue" but not bagna cauda)
31. Wasabi peas
32. Clam chowder in a sourdough bowl
33. Salted lassi
34. Sauerkraut
35. Root beer float
36. Cognac with a fat cigar (yes cognac, no cigar please!)
37. Clotted cream tea
38. Vodka jelly/Jell-O
39. Gumbo
40. Oxtail
41. Curried goat
42. Whole insects (crickets, roasted... not bad)
43. Phaal (hot hot curry! I prefer vindaloo, I think...)
44. Goat’s milk
45. Malt whisky from a bottle worth £60/$120 or more (oh yes!)
46. Fugu - I think this is the one hard line NO in the list- well, this and the cigar
47. Chicken tikka masala
48. Eel (not bad on sushi)
49. Krispy Kreme original glazed doughnut
50. Sea urchin (uni! bleh, didn't think much of it)
51. Prickly pear (tastes like... tequila...)
52. Umeboshi (interesting - there's an intense salty/sweet 'candy' they make with them)
53. Abalone - not that I know of; it might have shown up on a sashimi plate though
54. Paneer
55. McDonald’s Big Mac Meal
56. Spaetzle
57. Carob chips
61. S’mores
62. Sweetbreads (this isn't bread!)
63. Frogs’ legs (breaded and fried - not bad)
67. Beignets, churros, elephant ears or funnel cake
68. Haggis (better than you'd think from the description, but a little bland)
69. Fried plantain
70. Chitterlings, or andouillette (cajun spiced, not bad)
71. Eggs Benedict
83. Pocky
84. Tasting menu at a three-Michelin-star restaurant. - don't think I've been to a 3 star...
85. Kobe beef - that's what the menu said; it *was* pretty good...
86. Hare (not much meat, but it made a decent stew)
87. Goulash
88. Flowers (lots of different kinds, yes!)
89. Horse (reputedly)
90. Criollo chocolate
91. Spam (blech. never again)
92. Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee
100. Snake (barbecued, same time as the gator - "welcome to the south!")

wow, only 10 (maybe 11, the horse wasn't a certain thing...) I've not tried at least once.. and only 2 I'm not willing to try... not bad :-) It was amusing how many things I had to look up and said, "OH! that!" heh. Thanks, sidhefire, that was fun...

Another call to the universe...

Here's a call to all of you who know me and have contacts in the Seattle-and-North area, or organizations that are ok with telecommuters...

I'm looking for a job, have experience as a technical Project Manager and Product Support expert. I've been looking to find something outside of software, but am realizing this might not be the time to try moving to a new industry. basic description:

I have 13 years of experience in process design and high touch client facing project management in high tech. I'm particularly good at connecting the dots - recognizing and creatively clearing bottlenecks in projects and processes. My experience includes work in both high tech and the arts. I have a full home office set up so can telecommute with little extra setup.

Who do you know that would benefit from talking to me? Any thoughts are welcome.

Goodbyes, regrets...

Life is such a mix - some days start so well, and then an anvil drops from the sky and flattens you. Today's revelation has left me deeply thinky, and regretful. I really do try to live a life that leaves me able to say, "I'd change some things I did, I'd do less harm if I could, but for the most part I have no regrets..." It's also a reminder that it really is the right thing to do, to call that person you care about who have a misunderstanding with, talk it out - now, while you have the opportunity.

My freshman year in high school, I had my first serious boyfriend... he was sweet and caring and really adored me. I thought he was amazing and wonderful; we did the usual boyfriend/girlfriend things, we were two of the most amazingly geeky dorky kids (see homecoming picture below if you don't believe me), but we really did care for each other... and we weren't particularly good at communicating. We dated for the whole first part of the school year - sometime in the spring I figured out that he'd been dealing pot out of his locker, and confronted him about it. Looking back, I think I was hurt that he hadn't trusted me enough to ask if I'd like to try it, or even just let me know *he* had tried it - I'm not exactly sure how he saw me, really. I know that I was hurt that he had secrets from me, and I thought it was deeply stupid to do business like that out of his locker, especially since his mom worked for the school... I *KNOW* that at 15 I had no idea how to have a conversation about something like that, and did it badly. I think he felt I was going to turn him in, get him in trouble - was giving him ultimatums... which wasn't true, but looking back honestly, it might have been a reasonable assumption from what came out of my mouth. A few hours later he broke up with me in front of the whole science class, just before the bell rang to start - I ran off to the library (my sanctuary) to cry and try to figure out what I'd said to make him so angry with me, whether it could be fixed. Half an hour later, the school found out that four kids (all siblings) had been in a terrible car accident on the way to school - they were kids everyone in the school knew and liked (it was a very small school), Les and I lost real friends that day. He ran away from home before I could talk to him again. He came back several months later, but we never really spoke again - never made peace.
Through the (over 30) years since then, I've always assumed I'd find him, we'd be able to talk as grownups and I could tell him the things I couldn't back then, that I never thought badly of him, what the truth was, that I'm sorry for my part in that awful time for him... A month or so ago, I found his sister on Facebook - He's married and has at least one kid, I was happy to hear that - but he was going through some kind of surgery on his knee, so I figured I'd give it some time, let him get through that, and see if I could get his number from his sister, give him a call... and he died on Sunday, unexpectedly - they don't even know why yet. I'm so sad for his family - what an awful shock, he's not even 50 yet.
For my part, I know he probably didn't spend his life angst-ing about me, but it's *hard* to say goodbye without having said I'm sorry, without talking.

Bye, Les - I loved you, I was a stupid kid, I deeply regret never talking to you about all this - and I hope you were truly happy in the life you made for yourself...

ok, LOTS is going on - most of it good, the hard part is really the jobhunt - still plugging, feeling lots more connected with the idea of going back to work and not having it eat my soul again...

In my work on the jobhunt this morning, I came across this, from my days in product support and editing articles for the knowledgebase at Autodesk... this is text from a real article that was really posted... *sigh*:
***
The new bundle comes with about 50 little monkeys that run back and fourth between the client machine and the server. Sometimes the monkeys get tired. This is called a "FlexMonkeyTimeout".
***
back to work now - I'll write about my amazing and wonderful and interesting summer sometime soon... *love*

I've been running in too many directions to really post much lately - but i wanted to say a couple of things: thanks to all of our peeps who came to the "Liz-Aid" concert - I hear we raised enough to really help Liz keep things from being tight for a while, hopefully till the insurance and lawyers and whatnot get bills payed and she's able to be back on her feet again... at least enough to help alot. It feels good to have a chance to help someone who's given *so much* to our friends and community, and us. yay...
And thanks also to Dave & Betsy for hosting the concert - it was short notice, and what a lovely venue... thanks to sidhefire for donating *beautiful* pottery to sell for liz's aid - and thanks to Sooj and Kevin and Jamie for a wonderful fire show after... beauty! I have some pix, hope to post...

So many of our dear friends are needing help... do check out copperwise's posts, especially if you have resources in Portland that might be helpful; she and the Tanuki are awesome folks, and help at a time like this means so much...

*deep breath* so tonight, I'm literally in the middle of building a wedding cake for the very first of my neices/nephew to get married - tomorrow!
Friday Aug 21 - Benefit! Locals & folks who love our Liz, take note!

Ok - this is mostly for local Seattle folks. We're doing a special fundrasier house concert for our dear friend and supporter Liz Anderson - who sustained broken legs and other parts when she was hit by a car last week. Liz is a self-employed massage therapist who has given a lot of herself to the community over the years and we'd like to help her with a house concert. We'll give her 100% of the door/donations and $5 of every cd sold at the show. The driver's insurance *may* cover her medical bills, but there's still a lot to cover to keep her fed, mobile and housed until her legs heal enough to walk around a massage table all day again.

If the weather's dry, the show will be outside on Dave and Betsy Tinney's beautiful and cooly-shaded outdoor stage. We'll do a bunch of older Gaia Consort stuff - Chris is working a little on a new arrangement of "The Burning" and says he'll try to do ANY song from the past for a $20 donation to Liz (here's an opportunity to hear those favorites that we don't pull out very often!). We may have other members from the band or other surprises, so come join us for an evening of unusual song - and help someone who has given much to the community through a rough patch - you can make an immediate difference in Liz's life!

I just spoke with Liz the other day, by the way, and she's in great spirits - she's up and about, "hobbling with the best of them", and she'd like to try giving chair massages at the benefit - I'm just floored by this girl's strength and positive attitude. Come hug the girl and help her out.

Details:

FRIDAY August 21,
Downbeat at 8pm, doors open at 7:30
Due to insurance restrictions this is a strictly no alcohol event.

Directions can be found at http://www.bonepoets.com/redmond.html
ping me here with any questions.

Working hard with a job counsellor this week - hard thinking, engrossing work, discovering new tools (LinkedIn - very cool stuff - let me know if you're not linked to me, *especially* if you work for, or have connections with, a company that's good to work for)...
the big decision of the day: no, I won't be going to school, I'll be focusing on Getting the Sue a Job.
Think good thoughts for me/us, and please forgive me for not being very communicative lately, it's been a rough ride - but we'll get through this. so mote it be.
A&E are back in Amsterdam after burying A's Dad... odd that they seem nearer, now that they're once again 3,000 miles further away...
*love* to you - be well and happy
I'll post about the benefit concert for Liz and FaerieWorlds soonish - I've got a few good pix

Ages of Science and Wonders....

http://science.nasa.gov/headlines/y2009/16jul_wideawake.htm?list86787

40 years ago... man walked on the moon. I was 8 years old, and distinctly remember watching it on television... and talking to, among everyone else, my Great Grandpa & Grandma Briggs about it. I remember grandpa was particularly interested in talking about it, and amazed at how far we'd come in his lifetime. It did strike me at the time - but I didn't really do the math till today - Grandpa was 90 that year... so he'd have been 8 years old in 1879. The big new technologies then were telegraph and steam power - trains and boats - and in his personal life, those things were all days away by horse or wagon. The Incandescent bulb was *demonstrated to the public* that year... How awesome and amazing for him to have lived to see Jet airplanes, telephones and television, and man walking on the moon...
.. and how awesome that I personally knew well a man and a woman who were born when Ullyses S Grant was president...in which election, women and non-white men were not allowed to vote... yeah, we've come a long way. And look at the technological wonders we've achieved *since* then... hmmm...

ok, I'm taking a moment to bask in the awe of these thoughts...

Bone Poets in Granite Falls this Saturday! (July 18) - camping! picnic! MUSIC!!

Folks who'll be in the Seattle area looking for a fun afternoon and evening on Saturday, July 18th, 4 pm (music starts at 7-ish) come up to Granite Falls to play. Skip and Julie Hertz are sponsoring an outdoor house concert with the whole Bone Poets crew at their wonderful tree-lined 6.5 acre spread in Granite Falls. (directions up soon on the BPO site)

It's a grand place, that just screams BONE FEST!!

It's a bit of a drive from Seattle (about an hour), so Skip and Julie have graciously offered free camping space! Bring potluck food, eating utensils (and your tent if you're going to stay the night). Listen and dance to Bone Poets Orchestra, hang out at the bonfire and sleep there under the hopeful stars or in your tent. If you're camping, RSVP Skip and Julie at 2skip@hughes.net and let them know you'll be camping, so they can plan the space.

Details:

Saturday, July 18th 2009 4pm. Music begins around 7pm and ends just before sunset.

At the home of Skip and Judy Hertz 4929 Scherrer Rd, Granite Falls, WA 98252

Suggested donation $6 - $15.00

This will be a low or no alcohol event, and dinner is Potluck; there are a couple of big barbecues on the grounds if you bring something to grill, so we can do a meat and a veg grill, to your needs. Kids are ok, but be aware that Saxon is frequently spoken and we don't censor for young ears. Be respectful that there are neighbors - so likely no late night drum circle.

Please be packed up and on the road by noon the next day, if you camp. Take out everything you bring in. It's a LOVELY place, and we're excited to make some music for you there!

Ping me for directions!
