Printing and Tiling Tips

The beauty of owning your digital patterns is that you can print them as many times as you’d like and get started right away! Our PDF patterns can be printed at home because they're tiled on several common paper sizes:

              • US Letter (8.5” x 11”)
              • US Legal (8.5” x 14”)
              • A4 (210mm x 297mm)

 

After printing, you will need to assemble (tile) your pattern pages before cutting out.

Many designs are available in copyshop file size - A0 (36” x 48”). This large format paper size can be taken to your local print shop or ordered online through a pattern printing service.

Your PDFs could look one of two ways —

Green Diamond PDFs

PDFs that are only offered in three tiles sizes (A4, legal and letter) will be referred to as Green Diamond PDFs. These pdfs will utilize a green diamond for tile alignment.

Blue Diamond PDFs

PDFs that are offered in four tile sizes including A0 will be referred to as Blue Diamond PDFs. These PDFs will utilize a Blue Diamond for tile alignment.

Green Diamond PDFs will be marked with green diamonds around the perimeter of each page.

Blue Diamond PDFs will feature blue diamonds at the center top, left, bottom and right of each page.

Printing at Home

What you'll need —

Green Diamond Printing Instructions

  1. Set your page orientation to portrait and make certain that the output size is at “Actual Size” (100%).
  2. Print the first tiled page and measure the green registration mark that is printed at each border. Your measurement should equal exactly 1” for your pattern to be sized correctly.
  3. If your test measures accurately, print the remainder of the pattern, and follow tiling instructions to determine how to tile your pattern pieces. Follow the sewing instructions in your instructional PDF to complete your garment. If you are having difficulty with any part of the printing process, please contact our customer service team who can help you troubleshoot any issues.

Blue Diamond Printing Instructions

  1. Set your page orientation to portrait and make certain that the output size is at “Actual Size” (100%).
  2. Print the first tiled page (Page 2) and measure the 1” x 1” calibration box on your tile. Your box should measure exactly 1” for your pattern to be sized correctly.
  3. If your test measures accurately, print the remainder of the pattern, and follow tiling instructions to determine how to tile your pattern pieces. Follow the sewing instructions in your instructional PDF to complete your garment. If you are having difficulty with any part of the printing process, please contact our customer service team who can help you troubleshoot any issues.

Printing at Print Shop

You may take your pattern to a local print shop, a retailer that offers large format printing, or you may work with an online retailer that can print and ship your pattern directly to you. A0 tile prints should be printed at “Actual Size” (100%). A0 files can be printed on 48” x 36” sheets in landscape orientation.

Note: The first page of a multi-page A0 file is a layout diagram and can be omitted when printing to reduce both waste and cost. A0 files with only one page will not include the tile layout diagram.

Tiling Your Pattern

Tip: Each multi-page PDF pattern includes a tile layout diagram as a helpful guide! Files with only one page will not include the tile layout diagram.

Green Diamond Tiling Instructions

Need to know —

    • The red outline on each page is your cutting line. The green registration marks are guides for overlapping and lining up your tiles.
    • At the top of each page are row and column identifiers that will tell you where each page fits into the tiled layout. Each page is also numbered in light grey for quick assembly.

  1. Trim your pages using the red cutting line and begin tiling the first two pages of the pattern by overlaying the left side of page two onto the right side of page one. They should line up exactly and cover each other up. Tape into place.

  2. Continue this way across the entire row, starting with row one and building onto each row to complete, referring to the tile layout diagram as a guide.

  3. Once complete, trim or trace the pattern pieces for the view you are making. Proceed with making your garment by following the next step in your instructional PDF.

Blue Diamond Tiling Instructions

  1. Follow the tile layout diagram to place your tiles in the correct order, beginning with the upper left tile.

  2. Match the numbers and letters in each half diamond to create a whole diamond icon by overlapping the pattern tile edges, but do not secure the tiles together yet.

  3. Trim away the top and left edges along the border outline where necessary.

  4. When your tiles have been trimmed and arranged to match the tile layout diagram, use tape or glue to secure them together.

  5. Proceed with making your garment by following the next step in your instructional PDF.

Note: Some pattern pieces are so large they may appear across several A0 sheets and therefore also require tiling. Look out for blue diamonds on your copyshop files too!

There are no refunds on digital sewing patterns. Digital and Paper patterns are to be used for individual private home use only and not for commercial or manufacturing purposes.

  1. You must have a Simplicity.com account to purchase digital sewing patterns.
  2. You must download and print the digital sewing pattern yourself, it will not be mailed to you. All you need is a printer and the FREE Adobe Acrobat Reader program.
  3. Your digital sewing pattern downloads are accessible under the “PDF Patterns” tab on your Account page.
  4. You can download the tiled sewing pattern and instructions as many times as you like.

What's Included In Your Download

  • Each digital sewing pattern includes:
      1. Your tiled sewing pattern downloads in a range of paper sizes. There may be more than one file per paper size to accomodate all pattern pieces. Page one includes an image of the tile layout for easy assembly.
      2. An instruction file download that includes the fabric and yardage information and line art. This replaces the need for an envelope to be sent.
