The most important things you need to know about creating successful user experiences
We want our UX to be brilliant. We want to create stunning user experiences. We want our UX to drive the success of our business with useful and usable software products. This book draws on the wisdom and training of Jakob Nielsen and Don Norman to help you get your UX right - in 101 ways!
101 UX Principles shows you the 101 most important things you need to know about usability and design. A practical reference for UX professionals, and a shortcut to greatness for anyone who needs a clear and wise selection of principles to guide their UX success. Learn the key principles that drive brilliant UX design.
Enjoy 101 Principles including ‘Good UX has a Beginning, a Middle, and an End’, ‘Make Your Links Look Like Links’, ‘Don't Use Obsolete Icons’, ‘Decide Whether an Interaction Should Be Obvious, Easy, or Possible’, ‘Test with Real Users’, ‘Making the most of fonts’, ‘Good UX for search results’, and ‘Show your user - don't tell your user!’
“Good to read from beginning to end, and a nice dip-in-and-out text, the chapter titles reminded me of principles I don't even think about explicitly when I likely should. The book inspired me to start more explicitly articulating some of the principles I just take for granted.”
- Elizabeth Churchill, Director of User Experience at Google
“This is a great practical read. It is convenient to use as a reference when solving real UX problems. I would definitely recommend it as an introduction to UX, but also as a good reminder of best practices for more experienced designers.”
- Anne-Marie Léger, Designer at Shopify
“A great Mood Booster and Pep Talk. Like a good pep talk from a sports coach before a game, Will reminds us of the common pitfalls we all come across.”
- Kate Pincott Product Designer at Facebook

- Reviewed in the United States on February 25, 2020Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseGreat book- always find myself coming back to it.
Nice to the point, lots of good info and quick reference. Glad I picked this up, wish I got it sooner, but it’s still def part of the go-to Arsenal books for now and immediate future.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 6, 2020Format: PaperbackVerified PurchasePros: The book has set of interaction patterns, guidelines, principles and best practices. Fits for beginners or might serve as a checklist.
Cons: The principles are grouped by some sort of logic, but there are no clues, which group relates to what topic. Not so many illustrations.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 28, 2019Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseExactly what I was looking for! I’m less than one year into a UX career and was looking for an organized, effective learning tool to go with my classes. Super easy read, touched on important topics and wasn’t too advanced for a beginner.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 10, 2023Format: PaperbackThis book was a great overview of UX. As a career transitioner, I am working to gain as much useful knowledge as possible- this book was great for beginners and I definitely learned a lot. I think I will keep returning to this one! Definitely recommend.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 6, 2020Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseSo, if you already have basic level design knowledge and skills this book will not help you. I am a graphic designer looking to further my knowledge with web design. I bought this thinking it would be a “This is something you need to do and here is how to do that.” It’s not. It just gives a basic understanding of the do’s and Dont’s when it comes to designing. Unfortunately, I already knew the majority of the principles already from previous classes. Just know what you are looking for before purchasing this book. It could be useful to someone with little to no design background.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 17, 2018Format: PaperbackA great read! The book provides a lot of practical cases which I can apply in my current role. The principles are very specific and a great reference for improving your design no matter how simple or complex your project is.
The content is clear with practical explanations that cover basic design principles up to the central concepts of visual design, usability, and the psychology behind. Some might say that some of the principles are basic but you won't believe how many designers still don't get most of these right (me included). Keep this book within reach, you will find it useful whenever you are having second thoughts on your design decision.
There are some great takeaways from this book for anyone who's involved in creating digital products, but I would highly recommend it for UX/UI designers and developers.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 13, 2019Format: PaperbackI think the best way to use these UX principles will be while talking design with your stakeholders. While it wasn't anything groundbreaking it was still nicely done and well worded. If you're looking for easy to read, or validate your design principles this would be great book.
This book would get 5 stars if the author had used one his own principles and categorized the principles for web, mobile etc.
Overall good book for new designers looking to understand the core principles or seasoned professionals who want to brush up their knowledge.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 19, 2018Format: PaperbackI've never had an eye for good UX design. I've read several books, watched tutorials, etc... But this book has actually changed the way I design a website. It contains to-the-point tips that anyone can use to create or improve their website. Not only does it include helpful tips, but the author explains WHY those tips are important by relating it to UX problems we've all experienced at some point. What I find interesting is that many of the tips seem like common sense when you read it, yet many sites do not use these simple practices.
Whether you're an artistic genius or someone with the UX sense of a rock (like me), this book can help you. Highly recommend.

PlaceholderReviewed in India on August 17, 20191.0 out of 5 stars Its not about more in UX. Its all related to UI.
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseIt is not about related to core UX. All points are basics and its related to UI. UI points are also so basic. Useful for fresher. I think for marketing purpose the gave the wrong title.

NeilReviewed in the United Kingdom on March 7, 20192.0 out of 5 stars Overpriced and mostly obvious information.
Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseThis is reasonably useful - especially for anyone who has no formal design training.
However, my reason for two stars are the following:
UX is a broad area covering diverse topics such as psychology and user research among other things. It ain't just about what colour to make your website buttons. UX might relate to the sound a car door makes when closed, the texture of material used on aircraft seats, the design of your TV remote control or the lighting used in a showroom.
This book is not about UX. It's about a specific part of UX which is UI design. Furthermore, it's about a specific part of UI design which is almost exclusively about web/mobile. So if you are designing a web site or mobile app, then this book might be useful.
Unless you don't have much experience in web/mobile design, most of the stuff you read will be stuff you already know. "don't make buttons too small", "don't mix lots of typefaces", "don't use icons for the wrong purpose".
Some of it is highly subjective. For example, the author takes issue with using icons representing obsolete technologies like reel-to-reel tapes, and old-style telephones. The reel-to-reel tape that iOS use for voicemail is widely known: is he saying that Apple don't know how to do UI properly? The British traffic signs are considered a design classic, and feature many antiquated but widely recognised icons (speed camera for e.g). The point is about accepted recognition: most letters of the western alphabet were originally pictorial representations of everyday objects from about 3000 years ago, and the alphabet letters are fairly widely accepted and recognised by most 4 year olds.
This book does contain some useful information, but the kind that you can find easily all over the web, or might expect to be given in a free handout at a web design conference, not in a book costing £30.
Useful info for anyone new to UI design, but would argue it's too expensive. If you can buy it secondhand for less than £10 then do so. An hour later, after you've read it, you can resell it.
The real UX book you are probably looking for is "100 Things Every Designer Needs To Know About People" by Susan Weinschenk.
