Yuletide 2013 Letter

Dear Author,

First off, thank you so much for offering to write a story for a complete stranger! I truly appreciate it and want you to be able to write what inspires you, but here are some things about me.
In general I prefer happy endings, but I'm good with open or ambiguous endings. I love AUs of all flavors, worldbuilding, slice of life stories, friendships, families of choice, and character development and exploration.

I think the only thing I'd run away from is graphic non-con or gore. But if they were offscreen, so to speak, it might be okay.

The following are just ideas to help if you need them, but are not must-haves.

The Cutting Edge

So, I think Walter Dorsey might have been the only character available for this exchange? I'm a little confused about that, but it works out beautifully because I've always wondered what he really thought about his brother running off to join the merchant marines and then returning with this rather odd idea about going to the Olympics YET AGAIN. I'd enjoy anything about his thought process in that two year gap between the beginning of the movie and Doug going to work with Kate, or really his thought process at any point. Even after the movie when his brother and his new girlfriend? friend? are champs.

Disney Princesses - Megara

Like I said on my AO3 form, Meg is a girl with a past. And I think that makes her a little unique in terms of Disney heroines. There's no doubt she's done some bad things, but she's not beaten down by it and I love her for that. What's it like for her to be so in love again after love burned her so terribly before?

Parks and Recreation - Donna

Donna lives such an interesting life! Tell me about it, please. What are some unlikely places she's shown up and been fabulous in? What's the draw to Seattle? What keeps her in Pawnee?

Keeping Up Appearances

I watched this show every time it was on PBS and laughed every time Hyacinth answered the phone. I just love her and her neighbors and her endless schemes. And the episodes where she had parties! Or rather where she planned them. We so rarely got to see them. I always wondered how they went. Particularly that one where her house is filled with too many plants, haha.

Again thank you for signing up for Yuletide! I hope you enjoy yourself <3.

Dear Yuletide Author

Dear Yuletide Author,

Thank you for signing up and being willing to write a stranger on the internet a story!
I honestly have no firm likes or dislikes when it comes to this. Just know that I will enjoy anything you do, so please have fun.

Don't feel obliged to write anything along what I might say; these are just thoughts I've had. Go with whatever inspires you.

I first read Deerskin many years ago, and I reread it every so often and am struck anew with how much of a survivor Lissar is. I always feel like the ending comes too soon. It's a happy ending, but I'd enjoy reading just a little more about her happiness. I think she deserves it. I'm also interested in her life after the dramatic revelation. How does she handle going from sleeping in the stables to wearing shoes everyday? Does she wear shoes at all? I have these questions at the end each time.

I read Mastiff less than a month ago, and I'm still processing it, really. I love how Beka's confidence has grown and how good she is at her job. How much she feels for people less fortunate than she and how she makes time to be kind, no matter how tough or rocky her quest. I even liked Farmer, which was a surprise considering I was still holding out for a Beka/Rosto makeout scene at the very least. I was less impressed with the pacing of the novel, the dead fiance, and the reasons given for the traitor among Beka's team. And I missed seeing Beka at work in Corus, dealing with the crooks she loves and the crooks she locks away. I'm still intrigued by her strained familial relationships and the family she made all on her own.

If you are feeling a bit at a loss with the above two requests, Hanna is a less than two-hour ride about a teenage girl out on an assassination/revenge mission, seeing the world for the first time. Along the way she hears music for the first time, almost kisses a boy (and then promptly knocks him flat) , and makes her first friend. The girl she befriends, Sophie, is later picked up with her family by the villains of the film, who ask where Hanna has gone. The movie doesn't make it clear if they survived, but I hope they did. I'd love to know how Hanna is doing after the end. What is she doing now? Does she look for Sophie's family? (Honestly in my heart of hearts, I want Hanna and Sophie to be the best of penpals, or something like.) Is Hanna using her survival skills to build herself a treehouse in the wilds of suburban Munich? If you can't tell, I just want to know more, no matter what that might be.

It looks like the theme of all my requests is slice-of-life with a side of happy. But no matter what you decide to write, you are completely fulfilling my desire for "more!"

Thank you, Yuletide Author, this stranger appreciates your time.
♥

no, google, that is not what I meant

I actually have a half-written post that I've been meaning to finish since before Halloween, but just had to post this drive-by style...

I was updating my bookmarks since I've moved to Pinboard and accidentally googled a summary I was copy-pasting and this made me laugh:

No, Google, I did not spell Brendon's name incorrectly. I love that's what it takes issue with. And now, nose back to the grindstone.

I live... but delicious does not

So I have been pretty dead fandomwise for the last two months. Mostly because I was accepted into a grad program at the very last minute (yay!) and have been since running around like a crazy person, trying to squeeze in time to read (for fun!) and sleep.

Which makes me really sad with the changes on delicious that I woke up to this morning.
Service has already been spotty for a few weeks, but while the new design may be "prettier," it has lost a lot of the functionality that I depended on.

It boils down to:
1. All tags with /, !, * or other special characters are now broken.
Since one of the first things I do every morning is check brendon/spencer, harvey/mike etc., you can imagine my sad, bleary-eyed face when the 404 page popped up.

2. Only 10 links per page.
They have got to be kidding me. If someone has 3872 bookmarks saved, that just isn't feasible.
I have no idea what they were thinking when they make 10 the default, but couldn't they have left the option to change it.

3. Loss of streamlined view.
I miss the options where you could choose the level of detail available on the list.

sigh. I really hope AVOS gets it together and stops trying to reinvent the wheel. I saw on their blog they were worried no-one would like them. Well, it helps when your product actually works...

Happier posts to follow now that I have a better grip on my schedule. Lots of bigbang stories to catch up on...

This entry was originally posted at http://silentcs.dreamwidth.org/4416.html.comments.

BBB 2011: Stay With Me (Go Places) [Ryan/Spencer, PG13] Masterpost

   STAY WITH ME (GO PLACES)

Band(s):Panic! At The Disco,Fall Out Boy, My Chemical Romance
Pairing(s): Ryan/Spencer, pre-Ryan/Spencer/Brendon if you so desire.
Word Count: 10,898
Rating/Warnings: PG13, swearing

Summary: It's the fall of 2003 and Ryan is already having a rough senior year. College applications are right around the corner, Homecoming is in a few days, and Pet Salamander just isn't as satisfying as it used to be. Worse, Ryan has developed a raging crush on his best friend and feels powerless to do anything about it. When Ryan accidentally wishes Spencer away to the goblins, he finds himself on a fantastical quest to stop Brendon, Prince of the Goblins, from keeping Spencer forever. All he has to do is solve an enormous maze, storm a castle, and find the right words to say --all under 13 hours!
A story about tight pants, falling down, dancing, and getting lost. A Labyrinth AU. (1986 film)

Author's Note: This story wouldn't have happened without late-night musings with C., who linked me to photographs just like these and suggested that Brendon was forever practicing for prom. And then she told me to write a story about it and staged a last-minute beta, so I am really grateful for all the encouragement and flailing! ♥
A special shoutout to my amazing mixer and artist, my_atlantis and verbosewrdsmith , whose work really inspired me to add the finishing touches to this story.

Title from "Go Places" by the New Pornographers.

[ Masterpost | Part One | Part Two | Mix | Art | DW | AO3 ]

This entry was originally posted at http://silentcs.dreamwidth.org/4315.html.comments.
podfic: Mixed Bathing at Home by bexless & Invasion of the Patrick Snatcher by scribblinlenore

Invasion of the Patrick Snatcher sounds a lot cleaner. Thank you to bexless and lenore for writing these!

Hope you enjoy.
As I suppose it is customary to try to put the year in some sort of perspective... and I can only really keep track of what happened in the last month, we shall see.

Things for which I have been grateful:
(most definitely not in order, but I like numbered lists.)

1. star trek, for being awesome
2. my public library, for instituting excellent ILL programs
3. people who create podfic
4. fandom/book pimps (I'm still not sure how I ended up reading the Aubrey/Maturin novels, but I love them a lot. So, whatever, go osmosis!)
5. that lady who let me cut in line at the supermarket
6. whoever invented monthly bus passes
7. holmes being an asshole in the movie, not even kidding.
and...
8. That the yuletide deadline was NOT the 12th but the 21st! Thank you, patron saint of procrastinators!* It was my first time doing yuletide, or even deliberately writing fic with purpose, so I'm thrilled I made it through.
also
9. my yuletide present was Cthulu Returns and I loved it. It has everything I could want from a Dresden Files story. Tentacle monster! Harry narration! John Marcone! The Blue Beetle! Property Damage! Most excellent, and I am totally pleased that it is all mine, bwahaha.

Things I shall attempt in 2010:

1. read more nonfiction, because I do like it.
2. perhaps actually write more, instead of stare dazedly at ceiling?
3. finish some of those projects I have lying dejectedly about the house.
4. learn how to program a(n evil) robot.
5. win the lottery

.... that seems fair, right?

*Douglas Adams? Since he loves the sound deadlines make as they whoosh by.....

I love how my friends feel the need to share horrible news items with me. And by horrible I mean sharing that soon on BBC's Robin Hood they will have an episode where Robin Hood and Guy of Gisborne have to team up to rescue their mutual brother.

I don't have words for how wrong that is.

mom pinpoints appeal of new moon

My mom bought her ticket yesterday so she could rush straight over from work and see New Moon, because her love of the Robert is dedicated. (She even rented The Haunted Airman and that was just a mess.) When she came home she told me the only reason people like the movie is because there are shirtless young men. In abundance. And I quote (translated from the Spanish): "Watching shirtless men fight is wonderful. They had a bigger budget for glitter this movie. Everyone was so golden."

There you have it. My mom would love to buy edited versions of Twilight films that only included the parts with Robert or shirtlessness in them. Otherwise, she thought it was a really depressive movie.*

*I find the entire concept depressing, but that's just me.

I never learn

So last night I made it past the halfway point of At Swim, Two Boys and got the feeling that things probably were not going to end well for people. Further pause for reflection led me to reread the summary ....and the discovery that I never finished actually reading the entire thing. Right there, on the inside back flap of the jacket it says: "At its heart, At Swim, Two Boys is a tender and tragic love story that will resonate with all readers."

aggggh, I struggled with the language for the first chapter or so, and now the author's probably going to make me cry over it.

Obviously the real tragedy is that I still haven't learned to read the WHOLE SUMMARY of a book before cracking it open.

IT'S BEEN 4 DAYS SINCE I CRIED OVER FICTIONAL PEOPLE (IN PUBLIC).
Not that I expect this to last very long at this rate.....

oh bother

I was doing so well, and then yesterday the last chapter of Gaiman's The Graveyard Book made me start tearing up within the first paragraph. While on the bus, of course. So that makes it.... 12 days since I the last time I was being tearful over a book in public. Not even a full two weeks. Next time....

I loved the occasional illustrations in The Graveyard Book and how normal Nobody was, even though he lived in a graveyard and was being raised by ghosts and werewolves, etc.

Once I blinked back watery eyes, I started Ginn Hale's Wicked Gentlemen which was a treat. It was fairly short, only 210 pages, so I finished it last night when I got home. Really excellent world-building within those pages and a plot that keeps moving. I could definitely read more from her.

I don't know what I'll read on the bus tomorrow. I'm still working on At Swim, Two Boys, but it's too big to take in my purse. Maybe Darkly Dreaming Dexter? A serial killer can't make me cry, right?

resetting the counter:
IT'S BEEN 0 DAYS SINCE I CRIED OVER FICTIONAL PEOPLE (IN PUBLIC).

I signed up for Yuletide for the first time! In a lot of very random fandoms because I was running out of time. As for my requests... I'm totally not picky, so I'm not worried. I am so bad at being specific.

Pumpkin & Bean Stew

So this recipe isn't necessarily "holiday," but it is a favorite we make at my house every year during this time.

But maybe you haven't thrown away all your Halloween pumpkins yet; this Caribbean recipe can help you turn those green pumpkins into dinner! (bibbidi bobbidi boo!)

Ingredients:
(I don't really measure, especially with the spices, so just experiment until it tastes right! There's really no way to completely mess up.)

(camera shy: peppers and beans)

1 lb pink beans (or white)
half of a Kabocha (green pumpkin), approx 1 1b
sofrito:

1 tomato

1 onion

1 head of garlic

1 green bell pepper

2 ajies dulces (small sweet bell peppers)

a piece of cooking ham, size not that important
3 tbp tomato paste
8 culantro leaves
1.5 tsp ground oregano
2.5 tsp ground cumin
salt

Note about ingredients: You can find most of these ingredients at a regular supermarket, the only two that ever give real trouble are the ajies dulces, which are small sweet peppers that look like the Habanero ones but aren't at all spicy, and the culantro, a relative of cilantro that is super flavorful. If you can't find the peppers at a pan-Latin store, Trader Joe's has them in their frozen foods section; otherwise just substitute another half of a green bell pepper. Culantro is usually found in Asian supermarkets, especially those with Vietnamese customers, in packages or bundles with the other herbs. If you can't find it all in your area, try substituting chopped cilantro and 1 tsp ground coriander, being sure to taste as you go.

First you sort and wash your beans.

Then leave them soaking overnight in a bowl with at least 2 liters of water, but if you're making the whole 1 lb package of beans you probably want more than that. (Beans can be thirsty little things.)

Once the beans have soaked and plumped up, using the same water, put them in a large pot to simmer on low heat until soft. This usually takes 20-30 minutes.

While that's happening, take the ingredients in the sofrito category and chop them finely in a food processor or blender. If using cilantro, add this to the mix now.

Lightly coat the bottom of a pan with oil, and fry pieces of the ham until slightly browned.

Then add all of the sofrito ingredients and stir in the tomato paste, oregano and cumin.

Let simmer for a bit on low heat while you deal with the pumpkin, coming back to stir so things don't stick to the bottom.

Unlike other pumpkins of the season, Kabocha is a winter squash and thicker-skinned. This can make it really difficult to cut open, but once open, it's a breeze. Unless you have your own foolproof method of leveraging one of these open, I suggest the following steps:

wash the outside of the kabocha thoroughly with a brush

take a serrated knife or a sharp fork and poke holes through the skin (as you would a potato)

place the kabocha in your microwave for 2 minute increments until it is slightly warm (this takes about 4 minutes in my microwave)

it should be softened enough that a little extra oomph on the knife should split it in half

VICTORY IS YOURS

Now you can slice outwards from the orange flesh towards the green skin and feel accomplished as it cuts easily. You don't have to peel off the skin if you don't want to --it's tasty and nutritious.

Scoop out the seeds and cut the pumpkin into medium-sized pieces.

Add your now slightly-cooked sofrito to the beans, add the culantro if you haven't already, stir and taste for salt. Let it simmer for five minutes or so, then add the pumpkin.

The more pumpkin you add, the sweeter the soup and the thicker the broth becomes, especially if you let it sit for a while.

Leave it to simmer until the pumpkin is cooked through, stirring occasionally and checking the consistency of the liquid.
Be sure to taste to see if maybe you want to add some more spices or salt!

All done! This serves a bazillion people, and tastes better the next day, so at my house we always freeze some for later if we're not having a party. Serve with rice and maybe some veggies and you've got a complete meal! If you leave off the ham, it's also a good vegetarian option.

Anyhow, here are the super condensed, "yeah, yeah I know what I'm doing" instructions:

1. Sort, wash, and soak beans overnight in 2 Liters of water.
2. Simmer beans at low heat in the same water until soft.
3. After mincing all sofrito ingredients in a food processor, lightly oil a pan and fry pieces of ham till browned, then add sofrito at moderate heat and let simmer. Stir in tomato paste and spices.
4. Add sofrito and culantro to beans and let simmer together for a few minutes.
5. Add pumpkin and salt to taste.
6. Let simmer until pumpkin is cooked and broth has reached desired consistency. Taste for spices.
7. Serve and make someone else do the dishes.

ding dong the dracula's dead

Finally finished Dracula, and am not surprised I could never get through it when I was younger --I had a thing against epistolary novels back then, which I've mostly grown out of. I actually really enjoyed myself once I got past the first 50 pages of Jonathan Harker, heh.

Things I Learned From Dracula:

Jonathan Harker would be the most appropriate ambassador to the angry zombie horde. As he has no tasty brains to speak of. The rest of the people around him would be dropping like flies and he would be confused, wondering why everyone had started abandoning their toilette.

Dracula would totally love to talk to Stephen Fry.

Dracula's wives are the creepiest. Like, no joke. They are scarier than anything else in the book.

That scene with Lucy in the graveyard made it past the censor? Wow.

I kept trying to figure out how Renfield was related to Renfield Turnbull from Due South.

Mina totally wears the pants in that relationship. She is also apparently awesome enough that everyone loves her, even crazy people like Renfield. Her mere presence turns them sane.

This makes Mina sort of Mary Sueish but in the best of ways. I love her.

Van Helsing has a shrine to Mina at his house. He refers to Jonathan as Madam Mina's husband whenever possible, as that is the only thing important about him.

The reason we don't know much about Quincey Morris other than that he is good at shooting things is because he is the token American and must die. (He reminds me of that guy in the Little Women sequels who was in love with Amy's daughter, but wasn't good enough for her, so he went out West and died with her hair in his locket. He and Quincey are totally related.)

The presence of the wolves in the book kept making me create scenarios where werewolves could appear and kick ass.

When they say on the last page that Seward and Helsing were both happily married I can only assume that they married Mina and live with her and Jonathan in a little house in the country. It's the only thing that makes sense.

But yay! it is over! Now I can move on....

it's after halloween and things are still scary

So I forgot that Halloween = Oct 31 = end of the month = I need NOVEMBER'S monthly bus pass. *headdesk* Instead, I wandered around Target for a long while, was really horrified at the girls' toys section (They have preteen Dora the Explorer and her friends! Her new adventures involve makeup and hairstyle-changing! That's just not right -it's scarier than the 50 pages I read of Dracula today.), and since I'm a sucker for punishment, skimmed through a really terrible Romance novel called The Earl Claims His Wife.

Yeah, I don't even know why I picked that one. It contained very little logic, a plot with holes, nay, craters every which way, and consistently hilarious similies about the French army. The Earl was in battles against Napoleon right? But the French weren't as formidable as his estranged wife. He may have faced gunfire and imminent death, but his wife is totally more serious that that. I was cracking up in the Throw Pillow aisle like a madwoman.

I suddenly feel no guilt over the pile of Heyer novels amongst my books. The writing is so much better. Heck, even the writing in Darren Shan's first Cirque du Freak was better, and I wasn't convinced I even liked that book 'til halfway through. Why are most Romance novels just so ... bad?

IT'S BEEN 2 DAYS SINCE I CRIED OVER FICTIONAL PEOPLE (IN PUBLIC).*

*tears of laughter don't count.

so I never talk on this page, do I?

...not that I'm expecting anyone to read this, but the following contains spoilers about Cassandra Clare's Mortal Instruments series and Naomi Novik's His Majesty's Dragon, just in case someone is an extreme spoilerphobe. (I'm really, really not.)

Over the last few weeks, I've noticed an alarming trend in my reading habits: trying not to cry in public over fictional characters. The first time it really hit home that this had become an issue was when I was reading City of Ashes in the supermarket and holding tears back over Simon.1 /o\

Then of course, bright and early today I was actually crying on page 311 of His Majesty's Dragon2 because of Levitas. On the bus. At 9:43am. I had to dig out the pack of tissues I never use from the bottom of my purse.

I thought this was a low point for me until, oh, 2:30pm when I was blinking back tears furiously 3/4 through City of Glass.3 While waiting for the train. So yes, I've decided to keep track of this sort of thing, just to see how often I am in this situation. (And as encouragement to keep track of what I'm reading and comment on it further than just updating Shelfari.)

In conclusion:
IT'S BEEN 0 DAYS SINCE I CRIED OVER FICTIONAL PEOPLE (IN PUBLIC).

1. I could care less about Clary and Jace in this book, but the "side" characters' troubles kill me dead. Ask me how how I feel about Alec, Luke, Isabelle or omg Simon.
2. A++ Would cry over again.
3. Max!!

dude people do some really stupid things when they're bored. Heck, I do stupid things when I'm bored.

But I don't go squirrel fishing.
No. Seriously.

Thankfully I'm getting a hamster...I'd be terrified to get a squirrel. What if it decided to kill me because humans are stupid??
