The time has come for me to cull unloved BPAL, no matter how rare. I have some moving expenses coming up, ongoing vet expenses, and quite frankly, I don't have room anymore for things I'm not interested in wearing.

So to Ebay!

You'll find: Formula 54, Blue Moon '04 (and several other '04s), original Wildfire, Dead Man's Hand, TAL decant lots, themed LE lots. Rares, and lots of 'em!

This is a great opportunity for collectors to own some BPAL history.

I was poked over on Facebook to make a list of my favorite Fall-themed perfume, bath, and body products. I tend to be fairly brand-loyal in general, so several of my answers will not surprise you, but here goes nothin'.

1. Arcana perfume in Sleepy Hollow: An atmospheric ode to romantically spooky Autumn evenings, with fresh pumpkin, spiced apple brew and bonfire smoke. Perfect for the telling of deliciously scary tales.

You might think that this would smell like generic Autumnal potpourri. You'd be wrong. This is one of my absolute faaaaaavorite perfumes, and I do wear it as much out of season as in season. on me, it's like very creamy apples with the suggestion of pumpkin and the barest hint of spice. It just gives off this clean, glowy, gourmand scent that's not overly sweet, and never turns sour, even in the heat of summer. Love it, love it, love it. (This scent also comes in a soap, which is great, and a scrub, which is not nearly scrubby enough for my tastes.)

2. Villainess smooch body scrub in GingerSnapped: A slightly psychotic blend of sweet cinnamon, rich cardamom, spicy ginger, and a faint touch of innocent vanilla.

A favorite for years. This is a naughty, delicious, warming gingersnap that is absolutely perfect for Autumn. The Smooch formula always leaves me feeling clean and moisturized, and the scent is like a familiar blanket. Fans of chai tea will also love Masala. (GingerSnapped also comes in a delicious soap, lotion and a perfume, though the perfume has longevity issues on my skin.)

More under here.Collapse )

I have a few things still on their way to me. As I mentioned, goodies from Haunt, this year's BPAL/BPTP crop, and a few hair goodies from Cocoa Pink, whose scent list is enough to send you into sugar shock. (I got Apple Cinnamon Funnel Cake, Naughty Pumpkins, and Pumpkin Cake on Mondays, predictably).

There are two other companies I have enjoyed and wanted to mention, the first of which is Paintbox Soapworks. A lot of their Halloween collection has notes in it I can't wear (beer, licorice), though I do want to try Punkie Night. For a company that primarily does glycerin soaps, they are moisturizing, long lasting, and omg Gingermilk is the best. The other is Lathers N Lights, which, like Cocoa Pink, adds your choice of scent to their bath and body bases (and that list is also quite ridiculous). I particularly like their Pumpkin Glow scent. If you're a fan of Lush's American Cream, it's like that plus pumpkin pulp. It is fantastic as a body butter.

Hope that helps!

Lammas Altar

It's alllllmost August! August 1st is Lammas / Lughnasadh, the first of the three harvests in many Pagans' calendars. While it's not as Autumn-specific as say, Mabon or Samhain, the second and third harvests, it is about that time when I start to work on my Aututmn collection, to be released late August to early September. Actually, I've already started working on prototypes, seeing how various sealants work on real pressed autumn leaves for use in resin. It's been interesting looking at a pendant day after day to check for very subtle changes-- basically what I've seen so far is that the colors deepen and get more purpley, which is a cool effect. I just want to know for sure that the colors won't get gunky after I put something up for sale, so: pre-testing.

There is, however, an update coming later this week with Earring Wardrobes, Elven Tears, wings, and a few labradorite pieces, as well as a SLEW of earrings I made with my patina inks. And I got a new camera for work-only stuff, so hopefully the pictures will be awesome. I hope to have the update up on Friday-- there is a viewing on Thursday I must attend and possibly a funeral on Friday, so my timeline is a bit up in the air.

Anyway, I find that it really helps the creative process to think Autumn even in the sweltering Baltimore summer (because really, it's like a sauna out there with that humidity). I've been wearing some of my favorite fall perfumes while I work, so that includes BPAL's Shub Niggurath (GC-- I have a precious little of the original LE left and I don't want to squander it), Arcana's Sleepy Hollow (which performs wonderfully in the summer-- it's more of a light apple and pumpkin cream than something heavy and spicy... I *always* get compliments on it), and now Haunt's Cinnamon Girl, which smells like Villainess's GingerSnapped's softer, snugglier cousin with extra brown sugar.

I also have been burning Autumn-y candles-- right now, I have a pillar from Magickal Cupboard burning with Ember votives from Pier One on either side. It's time to do the yearly re-stock on Yankee's Autumn Leaves. When money starts rolling in again (as summer is always slow in the jewelry biz), I think I might just splurge on ReWined's Merlot candle. Pomegranate, plum, violet, rose & vanilla-- my toes CURLED when I smelled it in Trohv. Actually, I liked their entire line, not a single solitary stinker or single-note. The downside is that they're really expensive, even though I love their recycled aesthetic. So we'll see.

Oh! And also!

Gemini - Belly Dance Duet Showcase

Flissy and I will be performing as Verve-- a sword improv and a re-worked choreography. We spent some good time with the video for the "Touched" choreo we performed at CCT, and I think we have something stronger and more dynamic after a firm editorial hand. Plus this event also supports House of Ruth.

“The House Of Ruth Maryland is one of the nation's leading domestic violence centers, helping thousands of battered women and their children find the safety and security that so many of us take for granted.” Please visit their website to learn more: http://www.hruth.org/

A woman's perfume tells more about her than her handwriting. - Christian Dior

Unrelated: I am sitting here with warm sunshine against my back, sipping Thé du Hammam by Le Palais des Thés (another Birchbox find), and I do believe I am approaching bliss.

SO! In my ongoing quest to SMELL ALL THE THINGS, I have some quick and dirty scent reviews to share. Most of them are from the BPAL Labyrinth series, a partnership with Henson studios. The initial run is 5 scents, which I am hoping will grow because OMG my inner 15 year old is desperate for something related to the ballroom scene. Or, you know, the Bog of Eternal Stench. Not that I'd wear it. I'd just want to have it... because of reasons. Anyway!

Jareth:: Ethereal lilac fougere and gleaming leather with ti leaf, tonka absolute, white musk, and oudh.

I made a point of not looking at the notes when I sniffed my decants-- I ordered them about a month ago, so it was easy to forget the particulars. What struck me about this is that it seemed like a hybrid of two BPAL scents I already love-- it had the sugary near-citrus dusting of Hungry Ghost Moon (which is odd, as I see no citrus notes, so it's probably the tonka playing tricks on my nose) and the soft, tea-stained musk of Dorian (which is probably the fougère, though I detected no lilac). It is entirely unisex-- one might even say seductively androgynous, which is fitting for a scent having to do with David Bowie. On my skin, it went sweeter, but always had a lovely woody base, which I assume is the oudh. There was no citrus. I forsee this being a bottle purchase. Delicious.

Hoggle:: Fermented pumpkin, brown leather, dust, tobacco leaf, and dark woods.

When I cracked open my decant, I was like "HOLY WOW, this smells like Halloween." Looking back over the notes, that reaction makes perfect sense. The pumpkin is semi-sweet, but definitely spiced, and I do smell the dark woods in there, too. This is a scent that would not have been out of place in the Sleepy Hollow series, and I can see it getting a lot of play come Autumn. There's also a little bit of coffee-ness at play, though BPAL's coffee note is almost always cloying to me, and this, while certainly sweet, doesn't tip into the swap pile. I actually really like it. It would make a fantastic candle.

(It does not, however, feel like it should represent Hoggle, though, who seems like he'd smell like dirt and grass and patchouli and amber.)

Goblin Cider:: A dark, earthy ginger cider.

This smells like the booziest apple cider known to man. Like, almost "someone threw some tequila in the apple cider" boozy. There's also a very sharp ginger note here. In general, BPAL's cider scents can be very hit or miss on me. I loved Lambs Wool and the cider scent from the Sleepy Hollow series, and Autumn Cider went cloyingly sweet on me. It's hard to tell one way or another what this one's fate will be. Some scents take a few months to settle and shift into their final forms, so I think I'll be re-testing this in the Fall.

Fairy Bites:: Osmanthus and raw honey with lavender, chamomile, white peppermint, raspberry, honeysuckle, thyme, bergamot, and Dracula orchid.

Lavender is the predominant note here, but it's a delicate, herbal lavender tempered by chamomile. The white peppermint is somewhere in the background, giving this a very ethereal feel. A year or two I wouldn't have given this scent a second glance, but my newfound love of lavender has me reconsidering things, and I really like this. It, like its kin in the Somnium series, would make an excellent "getting ready for bed" scent on nights where you need a good, long, deep sleep. That said, I was a bit sad that the honeysuckle and raspberry didn't appear for me. Maybe as it ages!

13 Hours:: A scent of profound foreboding: dusty black stone, dried rosehips, black moss, and creeping ivy.

It smells like a rich person's sitting room. Forreals, it does. The rosehips are leaning kind of lavender-y to me, but I do smell ivy and, through some devil-magic, stone. I was afraid this would go to powder and icky florals, but it doesn't! It's actually very calming and pleasant. It would be an excellent rainy-day scent or would work even better as a room spray. No foreboding detected.

My other scent discovery of late has me shaking my head and wondering just exactly what is wrong with me that I am considering dropping $55 on a 1oz perfume "petite" bottle. Atelier Cologne's Orange Sanguine Absolue is amaaaaaazing. I'm not one who usually reaches for citrus scents, but I have worn my sample of this (obtained through Birchbox) three times this week. It's so bright and happy. It smells like sunshine. Well, the actual notes are blood orange, bitter orange, jasmine, geranium, amber, tonka, and sandalwood. On my skin, it is the most glorious semi-sweet blood orange with a woody base and I LUFF IT. It is like summer in a bottle, minus the ubiquitous coconut sunscreen. To repeat: I LUFF IT. I think I might cave eventually. Maybe if the VFMA show goes well.

Oooookay. That's enough RT for one evening. I need to get to bed! But before I do... aside from the individual company websites, many of these are available through The Soap Box Company and Scent Addict, though I have been less than thrilled with Scent Addict's turnaround/customer service in the past. It's really not that hard to make me happy-- just, you know, tell me if my order is going to be delayed, then respond to my query with more than just an automated tracking number email. It's not that hard.

Canadians, be sure to check out Pretty Indulgent. They have a great selection of bath goodies and nail polishes-- I've even ordered on occasion because I could indulge in various kinds of retail therapy all at once!

GOOD NIGHT, Y'ALL.

Warning: Many pictures ahead!

Pretty, shiny things. So many lovely things, such a little discretionary spending budget. It's July, which is one of the slower months in the jewelry biz. So slow, in fact, that several of my suppliers actually close up shop for the entire month and part of August. My sales usually ebb around this time of year, as is natural, with people consumed with thoughts of vacations. I don't worry-- I make a substantial amount in the late August to December stretch, with my Autumn updates and pre-holiday sales being far and away my most popular updates. But it's July, and aside from the natural ebb, I just spent a boatload of cash on supplies for the coming months. The discretionary spending budget is... ahem. You get the picture.

Still, I've made a few small purchases for myself over the couple of months.

Things I have bought.Collapse )

And now on to my current retail longings...

Even more pictures ahead!Collapse )

And finally, I am getting a haircut. My hair is getting pretty long, and I need to start trimming off the areas that were once bleached, because they have a different texture than the new stuff, which I've been careful to use only vegetable and plant-based dyes on, no ammonia. I am also going have sideswept bangs cut in again, as it downplays the roundness of my face. And then I will bump up the red from the current light ginger I have now to more of a true red. Basically, I envy April of Gardens of Whimsy's hair.

Stuff is going. I have some stuff that needs to get done by Saturday, but last night I had the luxury of coming home from Terra Firma and not even looking at my workbench. I took a hot shower, I had a cuddle with Olive, I read a little, and I fell asleep on the couch with Jason. I'm even having dinner with a friend tonight. Look at me, taking time for my own well-being.

I've been going through my Lupercalia BPALs (as well as a few odd Possets), so... reviews (some sniffed, some skin tested).

BPAL & Possets.Collapse )

I other product notes: Cocoa Pink is under new management. The site design is still godawful, but apparently the customer service is amazing now and the products are of great quality. I tried their shampoo & conditioners and I really, really like them. TAT is about two weeks, and everything was packaged well. I think their Shine Sweetie is going to become my default conditioner-- it doesn't make my hair oily, and I've been able to go much longer between shampoos with their products. Add to that, their American Cream scent dupe is spot on, and I can smell it in my hair days after I use it. I give the company under new management a total thumbs-up.

If you haven't already, send me pics of you in your Sihaya Designs shinies for a chance at a gift certificate. I've been posting pics over at the work blog, and you have a few more days to enter.

Okay, time to work on resin stuffs. Possession is on TV and it is soooo pretty.

Lots of things on my mind this morning.

-- For one, Olive's legs seem to be getting worse. It's certainly not to the point of debilitation, but it's quite noticeable (especially after she's just woken or stood up) that she can't take more than six or seven steps without wobbling over. Her back right leg especially seems to be very, very weak. She doesn't seem to be particularly bothered by it-- she's still playing with the other two (albeit more tentatively than before, and she's pouncing Mim right now), but it's a shock to see her dragging herself a step or two upon occasion. On the plus side, she seems to be getting her appetite back and she's more lovey than she was before (I think she loves spending mornings in the bedroom with mommy and daddy). So, anyhow... watch and wait, watch and wait. It's safe to say, though, that she'll never be a kitty who can manage stairs with ease. This cat, I tell you. Always something. Something expensive.

-- Gratitude 23: I am glad that Noxman and Mim are largely without problems and totally healthy.

-- I don't know if many people are on LJ on Sundays, so I'll reiterate: my next three sales in the Etsy shop are going to go, 100%, to a friend of a friend who's in desperate need. liminalia has the deets.

-- Anna & Brad's wedding reception was lovely. Delicious food, fine company. We even made some new friends. (Jason appears to have a British twin in all but likeness. They juggled lemons together for about an hour, while we womenfolk cooed on and on about how they looked like kittens or dolphins playing.)

-- Gratitude 24: I am glad it didn't rain on Anna's wedding day! Beautiful weather, indeed.

-- J & I are switching phones soon. Verizon doesn't cover his workplace, but Sprint does. Sprint also has a much better family plan, including data/internet access. I think I'm switching to the Intercept soon... a big step up from my Razr. Fancy.

-- BPAL UPDATE. Okay, I am giving in and buying another bottle of Mabon. I am down to the dregs of my 2004 bottle. I also really want a bottle of Wildfire, as I have cherished my dregs of that bottle for 6 years as well. Harvest Moon will probably be a decant, and I'll buy the bottles I want after my next update when cash is a little more flush. But whee, excited.

-- Today: more resin work. Finishing custom orders. Watching Dorian Gray. Scrambling together paperwork for a tax adjustment meeting with my SIL.

...and other things I blather about at 11:30 at night when I'm too tired to be useful, but too awake to go to bed.

-- Bean is doing okay. She's still in solitary, though I swap her out with the other two for an hour at night so she gets out some. She's stumbling more than before surgery, though that could be because she's still on painkillers.

-- Pike Place Market's Market Spice Tea? MY TOES ARE CURLING. Orange black tea with a whallop of red-hot cinnamon. This tea is amaaaaaaaaaazing.

Because I finally hit my "real life" limit today when the news started to report a TN man intentionally rammed an SUV with a child inside because the car had an Obama/Biden sticker. So, no more real life today. Reading the news lately has been horrible for my blood pressure.
