Saiidi

Flissy and I have nailed down costuming for Dec. 2nd. Bright colors, metal and fringe. She's being awesome and sewing kami skirts for us out of sequined black fabric, and it is my mission to find lush green flowers for our hair. It's funky and fun, and I really think it's my destiny to become the Rainbow Brite of tribal bellydance.

Saiidi class was very challenging tonight. Saiidi is a dance form from Upper Egypt, which often incorporates Raqs Assaya (cane dance). Tonight's class was comprised of half cane dancing and half... ballet. Which I haven't done since age five. Yeah. We did a lot of chaînés and pas de bourrées to work on our form and posture. Atef is not only an expert in Egyptian dance, but hip hop and ballet, as well. Very interesting. My homework is to get the chaînés + cane combo we learned down pat before next week (without giving myself a concussion), as well as to learn to chaîné gracefully in a straight line so I don't look like a drunken bumblebee. By the by, if any of you are coming to see my Dec. 2nd performance, you'll get the chance to watch Atef perform a double cane dance.

This time I was not instructed to "make-a da flirt," but I was told "you haff vereh goot body for de dance!" Which is good, I think.
