Good morning, Livejournal.

Part of my job here at Direct Dimensions is to develop marketing tools. When I say that I work at a laser scanning company, virtually no one outside of the industry knows what that means. Heck, I'm still not 100% on what exactly reverse engineering is, and I've asked about three dozen questions by now. Suffice it to say that I work with Very Smart People.

We do lots of stuff. We scan commercial items and aid in re-design. We scan parts-- for instance, antique airplane parts that no longer are in production-- and create data that aids in replication. We scan historical items and monuments-- the Liberty Bell, monuments all over DC-- and aid in restoration. We scan art and sculpture so that it can be reproduced in any scale, be it miniature or sculpture-garden size, and in a wide variety of mediums. We scan entire landscapes and rooms for 3D replication. We scan body parts so that we can create prosthetics. We can reproduce your face on video game characters, stuffed animals, wedding cake figurines-- anything you'd like, really. We scan products for comparison with other products to aid in lawsuits. We work with sooper sekrit government, military and aerospace companies. We do a lot.

The problem is that our website is so terminology-oriented that it can be hard to understand all of that. My job is to get the word out.

One of the ways I figured is to integrate a blog into our website. That way we can do project focuses that show these applications, also showcasing some of the technology we use.

Therefore, Mark (our webdesigner) and I created The Direct Dimensions Blog.

It's still in the baby-steps phase. One entry thus far, and the layout isn't completely finished yet. It's still a little spare and basic, but that will change. It'll likely be updated about once a week, maybe twice, and we're setting an RSS feed for that. Anyway, for some of you who wonder what it is that I do wherein I encounter my boss's face on a stuffed bunny rabbit, this is it.
