The Lingering Stars Dress.
This evening, Agnes and I set out with a mission: to find a nice dress to wear for the Valentine's Day dance. Conventional wisdom says that the dress should be red, but I already have two red dresses-- unless it was really something, I was gonna pass. I was looking for something versatile, as I'll be attending a boatload of weddings this spring and summer, so I wanted something that will be an investment. I have very classical tastes. My keywords are simple, clean, classy, elegant. Erm, that can also support my boobs, fall just at the knee, and showcase my hourglass.
Tonight's dress-shopping excursion was largely unsuccessful. Macy's... even Nordstrom... every dress I tried on was too... just too. An ugly material, a strange waistline, too small in the breast, too large in the breast, too long. Too showy. More frills than form. I don't know what the hell modern designers are basing their clothes on, but it sure as hell isn't a real woman's body. No woman wants a big mess of crinkly ruffles right over her chest-- it's ugly, it creates bad lines, it just looks sloppy. Ditto weird ruching or a thick sash across the waist-- adding pounds to the middle is not exactly elegant. No woman wants a hem that looks like she accidentally dragged it through a paper shredder. And for godsakes, what is with the metallic puke brown trend? With random rhinestone buckles? Just... ew. Overall, the vast majority of the dresses I saw tonight would have worn the woman, not the other way around. I prefer my dresses to frame me, not overwhelm me. I don't want someone contemplating how my dress's weirdly smushed bodice gives me vagina arms while they're supposed to be paying attention to our conversation. And I have no desire to end up a random fug on Go Fug Yourself, you know?
I did find one dress that was absolutely beautiful. Gold beaded tulle over spring green satin. Unfortunately, way over my price limit, and perhaps too fancy for swing dance. In the end, I came home and ordered the dress that I have been drooling over for two weeks now.
Yeah, a little pricey. But props to me for waiting for a sale. And also, I keep reminding myself that it's an investment, and I would have had to buy a dress like this soon, anyway. Plus, I had to learn from the tragedy of the Sculpture Garden Dress. You know-- that once in a lifetime dress... perfect fabric, perfect cut, gorgeous, unique color... and gone forever because you didn't order before it sold out. Erm, I'm still a little sore about it. I've been scouring eBay for like, seven months now, to no avail.
Anyway. Pretty, pretty. And exactly what I wanted.
God, I am such a girl sometimes.
