Sleepy Friday.
I had crazy dreams last night. In my dream, I was randomly selected to be a designer on Project Runway. This is amusing to me because I've only seen about three episodes of the show ever. Anyway, they were having a season where half the contestants were wild cards chosen at random. Somehow, I was chosen even without having applied. And I... I can't sew. I can barely hem a pair of pants. And displaying my lack of skills on TV was a terrifying experience. In the first challenge, they gave us $50 and set us loose in a craft store. We had to make an outfit in two days based on a pair of shoes we were given. The pair I got were a pair of black spike-heel ankle boots. So I freaked out and cried about how I can't sew, but eventually made a pair of black satin formal shorts (which, incidentally, I would never wear and have no idea where this came from), an oversized men's dress shirt, and a loose red tie. As an accessory, I got to choose a bowler hat with a red band. How very Kate Moss. Anyway, as it turned out, the judges hemmed and hawwed and I think the catty guy (Michael Kors?) said that my design showed my technical inexperience but was okay in a runway kind of way, and I was spared from being Auf'd. I think maybe my dreams were switched with another one of my fandom friends' dreams. Any of you have random L Word dreams? Supernatural dreams? Hmm?
It is Friday. It is payday. It is a generally good day, if not going a little slow. I may be going dancing tonight, even though I'm not really feeling it. I think it's the cold weather-- I've either been in warm, comfy, snuggling mode or warm pub mode. Though bellydance last night actually went fairly well. I know I'll probably be in intermediate level for the better part of a year, and of course, my first time through is going to be tough. Which it has been-- level 2 has been kicking my ass. Part of this is general newbie-ishness and getting more advanced moves into my body so that I'm doing them and not thinking through them, and part of it is that the instructor has been kind of sick and scatterbrained lately, which makes following a little hard. Rebecca is awesome, but vocalizing how to learn a new move isn't her strength, and it's been a rough month for her health-wise. I will probably only be able to drop in for two classes in the next sesson since I'll be traveling though most of January, but maybe in the springtime, I'll take a class with another instructor just to feel out other teachers' styles. This is not to knock on Rebecca-- she's the first to say that you should learn from lots of sources.
One of the challenges of level 2 is learning to take the lead. Tribal-style bellydance is very group-oriented, and often has a group following one lead or a group acting as a chorus while a soloist dances. I find that while I generally follow a strong lead well, once I get to be the lead, my mind blanks, and I have a tendency to do certain moves over and over. Turning Turkish, hip drops, chi-pot. Abby does Egyptian a lot. We all have our fall-backs, and that's because we're new. I really need to work on learning cues and transitioning between moves. We also worked on hands a lot last night, which was exceptionally helpful to me because I'm often worrying so much about posture and hip position that my hands are doing god-knows-what. So a good primer on hand positions and how to get my (small, stubby) hands to look moderately graceful was very nice.
Hmm, I should make a bellydance icon.
Tomorrow, I have a shopping excursion planned with
deliriouscat wherein we will hit craft stores for wrapping supplies, and maybe I can finish up shopping for family guys. Largely, my shopping is done, which is a relief, but I am still so behind on other things and nervous about whether or not certain web orders will make it to my door with enough turnaround for me to send them to the right people. So, um... if I don't see you on a weekly basis, and you get your gift a few days late, I love you, okay?
Amusingly, my traveling in January will require me to get a pedicure, company expensed.
