Obligatory Lost post
Thing the first: OMG NO EKO OMG. *cue Vader* NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
Thing the second: OMGWTFEYEPATCH?!
I can't believe that they killed Eko. Well, actually I can. We knew most of his backstory, and I guess that was enough to render him expendable, but really? He was one of the most interesting characters on the show-- he's done more in the past season than Charlie, Claire, Sayid, and Hurley combined. And he was only in half of it!
Seriously, I get that his backstory was done. But what about his current story? The crisis of faith? Yes, it was somewhat addressed in last night's episode. But the Jesus Stick? I want to know the significance of those verses. (Specifically why the "look North" inscription mirrors a notation on the "Lockdown" map so closely.) I want to know his side of the fence-- where he stands theologically in relation to Locke and Jack, because, for me, Eko, Locke, and Jack are three characters who are constantly sliding back and forth and swapping places on the
<--faith/fate ---- coincidence ---- science/manipulation--> scale. They made a good triangle, or maybe Eko was like the middle bubble in the Venn diagram of Jack and Locke, taking Locke's place when Locke lost faith, and returning to the center when Locke found it again.
Well, at least they've gotJesus Desmond. I'm interested in where he fits in, theologically. Flashback!Desmond seems to be all about fate ("you've got to lift it up, brothah", "see you in another life", his flashback convo with Libby), whereas CrazyIsland!Desmond seems to be more of the mind that no, there is no pattern, and his luck just fucking sucks. The plane crash was not fate, but a mistake he made. Scientifically explainable. Logical. But PostExplosion!Desmond? I dunno. He seems all zen and precognitive, but I guess we'll just have to see. (Is it wrong that I'm having naughty thoughts about someone who looks so much like a pop-culture Jesus?)
So what is the smoke creature? On the 'Lockdown' map, a Cerberus system is noted, and it looks underground, with entrance points on the surface of the island. Based on that, and that the smoke creature is more active in certain parts of the island than others, I'm going to say that the smoke creature & 'Cerberus' are one and the same. Mythologically, it fits:
We know that Rousseau called the smoke monster the island's "security system." I believe it to be at least partially mechanic-- hence the sounds we hear as its "roar." Could that be the sound of Cerberus moving in / emerging from some underground tunnel, like some weird-ass subway train?
I'm guessing that Kate's horse / Jack's dad / Yemi / etc. are all part of the Cerberus system. So what is Cerberus that it causes these hallucinations? It could be some kind of nerve gas, I guess. Either that, or it's some kind of sentient creature that pulls from the guilty subconscious of those it encounters. But that doesn't explain why it kills some people (Eko, the pilot) and leaves others alone (Locke). Considering Eko's conversation with Yemi last night, there does seem to be an aspect of judging one according to some moral code, I'm just not sure what that moral code is just yet. Unless Yemi wasn't part of Cerberus, and that entire exchange was part of Eko's dying hallucination.
Whatever it is, it can do more than just toy with minds. It can pick you up and smash you into trees until you die. It can grab you by the ankle and try to suck you into its hole. So it's clearly more than simply a psychological construct.
And what is it protecting? Still thinking about that, but I'm guessing it's the inner workings of the island, and probably not pretty. I don't know that I buy that the Island's version of Hades is anything like the mythological Hades, but I'mma go out on a limb and say it's probably not pixies and fairy dust, yanno?
(Tangent: Why did it leave Locke alone the first time when he presumably saw a "white light," but not in "Exodus: Part 2" when it tried to drag him into its hole? Are there maybe elements to the smoke monster? One that is purely psychological and one that is purely feral? You know how this show likes its black/white symbolism.)
And again, OMGWTFEYEPATCH? I'm guessing whoever that was is in The Flame. In the Pearl Station orientation video, Mark Wickmund/Marvin Candle said that they would be monitoring six stations. Presumably, those stations are: The Swan, The Arrow, The Flame, The Hydra, The Staff, & probably The Door (or whatever that scratched-out station is). Of those, the only station we haven't seen is The Flame. I'm guessing that's where he is. Which doesn't answer who he is. Is he left-over Dharma or maybe a survivor of Danielle's crew?

Pausing a moment to stop and remark upon some interesting theory I came upon this morning, suggested by
ack_attack in this post.
We know that the island emits some form of magnetic radioactivity, yeah? And radioactive treatments are used in curing cancers, disabilities, yeah? But in small doses. Which would sort of explain Locke's legs and Rose's cancer. I mean, in a TV-world, cures are instantaneous, right?
But if you're exposed for too long, you could develop tumors and go sterile. Well, Ben has a tumor, and the Others have a creepy obsession with children, what with the kidnapping children and strong, fertile adults. And having a fertility doctor (Juliet) and an obstetrician (Ethan).
Anyway, a theory, but a really interesting one that deserves to be shared.

I started looking for Lost icons last night, and realized that I had saved about 75% Jack and the rest Desmond and Eko. Yeah, I think it's pretty clear who my favorite characters are. I also think it's really interesting that I haven't developed a real 'ship to well, 'ship. I certainly like Juliet a hell of a lot more than Kate where Jack's concerned. Even if she does turn out to be a manipulative, lying mastermind, she's at least not a damselfly. And I really haven't gotten a slashy vibe from anyone, which for me is downright bizarre. Well, maybe Locke/Boone. If you've got a 'ship, I want to know about it, and why. Consider my curiosity piqued.
Anyway, I am continuing the search for the perfect Jack smiling icon. Your mission, friendslist, should you choose to accept it-- point me towards pretty smiling Jack icons, pretty please. And if you have favorite Lost icon-makers to pimp, hit me up.

From Wikipedia: In Greek mythology, Cerberus was the hound of Hades—- a monstrous three-headed dog (sometimes said to have 50 or 100 heads) with a snake for a tail and serpentine mane. He guarded the gate to Hades (the Greek underworld) and ensured that the dead could not leave and the living could not enter.
