Monday, v2.0

Thing the first-- ye gods, I feel like roadkill this morning. I got almost ten hours of sleep last night, but I woke up feeling like I could easily sleep for five more hours. Plus, I was nauseated by belief. Knowing that this has no gestational basis, I'm kind of perplexed. Half a Pepsi and a blueberry muffin later, I feel a little better, but today's workday is going to be torturously long. I forsee a very early bedtime in my immediate future.

Thing the second-- my Starbucks has pumpkin spice lattes! Tomorrow, one shall be mine.

Thing the third-- holy BPAL update, Batman!

A Picnic In Arkham:: New General Catelogue category, based on Lovecraft's work. Some of these are re-issues from an old LE category, Springtime in Arkham, and some are brand new. I only hope and pray that Shub Niggurath comes back soon, because my bottle is half-empty and it's my favorite comfort scent. The descriptions are rather long, so I only listed the notes. Visit the site for the full description. There have also been various other Lovecraft-inspired scents, too-- there's R'lyeh (was in Wanderlust, now in this category), Nyarlathotep (was in Excolo, now in this category), and Mi Go Brain Canister, which was an LE some time ago.

Al Azif:: A sinister, sinuous incense of summoning, a herald and paean to the Primordial Gods of Darkness, Chaos, Madness and Decay.
A reissue. I've heard that this is very incense-y, and some people really love it. I don't know that it wouldn't be too dry for me, but at least now I can try it.

Arkham:: A shadowy, unapproachable forest of maple, birch, dogwood, cypress and pine softened by a garland of New England wildflowers: bergamot, columbine, rue anemone, blue violet, creeping phlox, bloodroot, toadflax, and pixie moss.
I think this one was very sweetly outdoors-y. I may want to try this simply for the New England wildflowers. Generally wildflowers are much less in-your-face old lady floral on me.

Azathoth:: Azathoth is the blind, idiot god who sits on a black throne at the center of Chaos. His scent is high-pitched and screeching, both impenetrably dark and searingly bright with the clarity of madness: tangerine, saffron, vetiver, black amber and cedarwood.
I don't remember this one particularly catching my eye when I read the reviews.

Cthulhu:: A creeping, wet, slithering scent, dripping with seaweed, oceanic plants and dark, unfathomable waters.
Was this the one that randomly smelled like grapefruit, or was that R'lyeh (in the Wanderlust section)?

High Priest Not To Be Described:: Monastic incense, blood musk, black leather, cypress, pimento, white pepper, and Roman chamomile.
Mmmm. Incense + leather could be really nice.

Miskatonic University:: The scent of Irish coffee, dusty tomes and polished oakwood halls.
I had such high hopes for this one, but it went super sweet on me-- almost caramel-y. Well, at least I can try it again to see if it was a chemistry thing.

The Music of Erich Zahn:: A ghoulish and tortured scent, suffused with the blackness of space illimitable: ajowan, vetiver, black musk, opoponax, mimosa, and tamarind.
Mimosa is ten kinds of 'no' on me.

Night Gaunt:: Their scent of their slick, rubbery hides is bittersweet, ticklish, and skin-creeping: something akin to yuzu, white grapefruit, and kumquat mixed with the snow-dusted flowers of Mount Ngranek.
Yuzu is fabulous. This looks to be a bright, sparkling fruity blend.

Shoggoth:: An amorphous, radiant, incandescent scent. Ever changing, protoplasmic and primordial: white amber, green coconut meat, iris, palmarosa, Chinese peony, lime, water lily, snowdrop, muguet, lemongrass, osmanthus, wisteria, glassy musk, and hinoki.
I'm guessing this will be a subdued lime and lemongrass scent with delicate florals. I have a few lime scents that I love, but I'd be interested in trying this if an imp came my way.

Y'ha-nthlei:: A swirling, lightless, effervescent scent: the deepest marine notes with bergamot, eucalyptus and foamy ambergris.
Bergamot + marine notes. Probably not.

Halloween 2006:: Limited edition run until December 1st, 2006.

All Saints:: Based on a venerable French pontifical incense blend: monastic frankincense and myrrh, Damascus rose, Russian gardenia, cassia, and lily of the valley wafting on a chill Autumn wind. A celebration of the glory and suffering of the saints and matryrs of the Church.
This was actually a very pretty floral, I thought. It was kind of mournful-- like a graveyard on a grey Autumn morning. I just don't tend to reach for florals, but if that's your thing, don't miss out on this one.

All Souls:: A day of remembrance and intercession. Without the prayers and sacrifices of their families and loved ones, the faithful departed may not be cleansed of their venal sins, and thereby cannot attain beatific vision. On November 2nd, prayers are sung and offerings are made to aid lost souls in transcending purgatory. An incense blend that invokes the higher qualities of mercy and compassion, mingled with the soft, sugared currant scent of offertory soul cakes.
I didn't have a whole lot of money, so I didn't order this, but I have a feeling that this will be very nice. I'm going to wait on reviews, and at least attain a decant. I've got a good feeling about this one.

Creepy:: This season’s Ridiculous Scent! As creepy as Spooky was spooky, this is the scent of butterscotch-kissed, caramel-smothered red apples spiked with a blast of coconut rum.
Apples! But oh wait, butterscotch and caramel. Good for eating, headache-inducing as a perfume, I think. And I already have a candied apple scent-- The Hesperides is the sweetest green apple you can imagine.

Devil's Night:: Devil’s Eve, Devil’s Night, Gate Night, Trick Night, Mischief Night; whatever your name for it might be, the chaos is still the same. Contrary to popular belief, this festival of pandemonium isn’t unique to Detroit. Falling on October 30th, it is an evening of mayhem and destruction. On the gentler side, it may be celebrated by practical jokes, an egging, Ding-Dong-Ditch, or enthusiastic TP’ing of your most hated neighbor’s trees, and on the more violent side, arson and vandalism. This is the scent of autumn night, fires in the distance, with a touch of boozy swoon, playful sugar and thuggish musk.
I do like this one very much, but have most of a full bottle left over from last year. This didn't work on me at first, but has aged spectacularly. I will probably wear this quite a lot as the weather gets cold. It's musky sugar with a hint of vanilla and smoke.

Dia De Los Muertos:: A joyous celebration of La Catarina, La Flaca, La Muerte… Glorious, Beautiful Death. In Mexico, death is not something to be feared or hated; She is embraced, loved, and adored. La Muerte is fêted, as the celebrant "…chases after it, mocks it, courts it, hugs it, sleeps with it; it is his favorite plaything and his most lasting love." This is a Mexican paean to La Huesuda: dry, crackling leaves, the incense smoke of altars honoring Death and the Dead, funeral bouquets, the candies, chocolates, foods and tobacco of the ofrenda, amaranth, sweet cactus blossom and desert cereus.
This is always too dry to the point of smelling burnt on me. I swapped my bottle last year.

Pumpkin Queen:: The Glorious Grand Dame of the Pumpkin Patch! Regal Egyptian Amber, red ginger, orange peel, mandarin, cardamom, fig leaf and warm pumpkin.
Everything here smells wonderful on me, with the exception of orange peel. I snapped up a bottle of this one.

Punkie Night:: Once upon a time, on a wild October night many years ago, a fair took place at Chiselborough. The men of the village of Hinton St. George made their way to the fair, and spent the night in revelry, drinking and carrying on, far into the darkest hours. Their wives grew concerned, and went looking for their unruly husbands. In order to see their way through the autumn gloom, they hollowed out mangel-wurzels and crafted them into makeshift lanterns. The drunken men, in their sloshy haze, saw the ghostly lights approaching, and believed them to be goolies – the furious spirits of unbaptized children. In terror, they fled in panic from their bemused, bewildered wives. To this day, that night of foolishness is still celebrated! This is a light-hearted scent: apple orchards, bright cranberries, and a touch of warm cider.
Oooh-- apple cider and cranberries? Yep. Bottle.

Samhain:: Truly the scent of autumn itself -- damp woods, fir needle, and black patchouli with the gentlest touches of warm pumpkin, clove, nutmeg, allspice, sweet red apple and mullein.
I still have my 2004 vintage bottle of Samhain, which is mellowing nicely with age. Karyn is going to let me sniff her 2005 variety when I see her next, but I doubt I need any fresh Samhain. It's fabulous, but very strong, so the teensiest dab will do me.

Samhainophobia:: The fear of Halloween. Menacing Haitian vetiver, patchouli, and clove with a shock of bourbon geranium, grim oakmoss, and dread-inspiring balsams pierce the innocuous scent of autumn leaves.
Eeek. Vetiver. But. I was clamoring for 'spookier, more atmospheric' scents, and this is what Beth delivered. I ordered a bottle on principle, hoping it will be patchouli and clove.

Sugar Skull:: Vibrant with the joy and sweetness of life in death! A blend of five sugars, lightly dusted with candied fruits.
This was straight-up maple sugar on me. I have an imp, and that's all I need.

The Pumpkin Patch:: Five bottles--
Pumpkin with apple cider and mulling spice.
Pumpkin with cocoa, hazelnut and walnut.
Pumpkin and pomegranate.
Pumpkin with sandalwood and orris.
Pumpkin with five woods, English ivy and galangal root.

I got this last year, and swapped all but Pumpkin & Cider (which is one of my favorite scents), and Pumpkin & Pomegranate (which started out very fruity, but has taken on an almost medicinal tinge with age). I would love to get ahold of the Pumpkin & Five Woods one again, so perhaps I can swap for it.

The Order of the Dragon:: Limited Edition series based on Dracula that is available until December 1st. The descriptions are quite long, so I only listed the notes.

The Bloody Sword:: A distillation of force, conquest, power and fury: dragon’s blood, myrrh, black pepper, labdanum, benzoin, leather, fire, and steel.
Dragon's blood. Nope.

The Brides of Dracula:: Unquenchable desire, seething lust, malevolent sexuality, and voracious hunger lurking beneath a shimmering veil of unearthly beauty: gleaming skin musk, honey and white amber, plum blossom, osmanthus, sandalwood, calla lily, and a light, sensual blend of Eastern spices.
Whatever Beth uses as 'skin musk' generally smells great on me. I'm guessing this is going to be the Snake-Oil-family scent from this offering. I would definitely like to try this.

Carfax Abbey:: The scent of abandoned places, of desolation and emptiness: heavy woods and thin dusty herbs touched by the wafting incense of a nearby chapel.
I bet this is going to be desolately wonderful. A definite decant.

The Carpathian Mountains:: Mountain air and the scent of crisp snow blanketing the mountain’s flora: Scottish fir, beech, cembra and mugho pine, rhododendron, currant, honeysuckle, raspberry leaf, dwarf juniper, sedge, meadow grass, snowdrop, rose bay, lily of the valley, starwort, lichen and mosses.
Yesssss. If this smells like mountain air, I am likely to get a bottle.

The Castle:: A distant whisper of pine, wet moss and dry leaves passing through vast halls and winding dungeons whose scent bears the memory of blood, faded splendor, imperial elegance and stunning violence.
Another leafy blend. Another decant.

Count Dracula:: The essence of nobility, brutality and true Will made flesh and propelled through the eons by an ever-burning hatred: black patchouli, neroli, tonka, cinnamon, bitter clove, leather, black musk, coffin wood and fiery ginger.
With the exception of the neroli, I like everything here. This seems like it might be a more masculine Three Witches. I definitely want to try this one.

Johnathan Harker:: A respectable gentleman’s scent: lavender, iris, white tea, verbena and white sandalwood.
Eh.

Quincey Morris:: Rough on the edges, but possessing the true essence of valor and nobility of spirit: tobacco, vanilla, white pear, cedar, rugged musk and saddle leather.
Saddle leather, you say? This was the dominant note of Dead Man's Hand, my beloved. So... quite possibly yes, if the tobacco isn't too strong.

Wilhemina Murray:: Tea rose, white sandalwood and a flurry of pale, virginal blossoms, smeared with a smoky, blood-soiled blend of myrrh, hyacinth, Daemonorops resin, dark musk and blackcurrant.
Could go either way-- I don't know how these notes are going to blend.

R.M. Renfield:: Unhinged: moss, cumin, patchouli, Balsam of Peru, and neroli.
Eh.

Dr. John Seward:: Penetrating and gifted, vulnerable, with just a hint of opium-blurred delirium: poppy smoke, champaca flower, tonka, sandalwood, ginger, white pepper.
Nothing really catches my eye.

Lucy Westenra:: A wanton beauty, corrupt, hypnotic, seductive, and feral: magnolia, iris, Moroccan rose, frankincense, crushed jasmine blossom, blood orange, tobacco flower and white musk.
Probably too floral for me.

What I got: Punkie Night, Pumpkin Queen, Samhainophobia, Black Moon, and two imps of Mag Mell and Les Bijoux.

What I still want to try: Silence, All Souls, The Brides of Dracula, Carfax Abbey, The Carpathian Mountains, The Castle, Count Dracula, Quincey Morris, and Wilhemina Murray. I also want a bottle of Doc Constantine.
