Friday Morning List Post.
Virgo:: Have you heard of the Lorax, the fuzzy yellow hero of the Dr. Seuss story? When a greedy factory owner moves into his idyllic little paradise and begins despoiling the forest, the Lorax complains on its behalf, saying, "I speak for the trees, because the trees have no tongues." Be like the Lorax, Virgo. Stand up for those who are too meek or weak or inarticulate to defend their own interests. It's the right thing to do, and besides, by doing so you will make connections that generate lucky breaks for you.
1. You know it's going to be a great day when you start it off by dripping Krazy Glue on your favorite pair of pants. I don't know if it's going to come out-- maybe if I wash them enough it'll start to break down, or at least get faded and pliable enough where it's not noticeable. Other than that, I'll soon be in the market for another pair of black Express Editor pants. (Why is it always the super-expensive ones?) I mean, I have a couple pairs of Correspondents, but still, waah.
2. Silent Hill was the crappiest piece of crappy crap I have seen in a very, very long while. No, really.
3. Anna graduates today! I will spend the evening celebrating with her in decadent style. Or, you know, maybe just getting a little punchy. But regardless, yay! I am so proud of you!
4. Retail therapy ahoy-- I put in a little Sephora order yesterday, as I hadn't done so since Christmas. I needed to restock on old favorites-- BeneFit's concealer palette, mascara, etc. I finally was able to snag the Pop Beauty eyeshadow palette that I've been eyeing, and a pan of six different red glosses, plus a Stila kajal eyeliner in Emerald. I've kinda been in a makeup rut lately-- it's been Urban Decay's X and Shotgun pretty much every day, so some new stuff to play with would be nice. I also picked up a few Villainess bars-- Jade, Asphyxiate, and Caanan. Good stuff.
5. Speaking of makeup in general, it's time for me to clean out my train case. I've already stopped buying from companies that condone animal testing, but it's time to toss out old backups, too. It's kind of sad, because the scent of CoverGirl makeup instantly brings back memories of raiding my mother's makeup drawer when I was little, but since I've started doing my research, I've figured out that pretty much anything you can get at a drugstore (with the exception of Revlon and Jane) at least has animal-tested components. So it's kind of a trade-off. Pricier boutiques like Sephora carry more conscious lines and higher-quality products, but they'll also cost you your arm. It's a bargain I'm willing to make. Though it's sad that as soon as I run out of my current foundation, I'm going to have to shell out $30 for some from MAC. Bare Minerals just isn't my thing.
6. And speaking of animal testing in general, The Body Shop has been sold to the same company that owns L'Oreal and many other companies that do test on animals. So, while the company itself might not test on animals, its money is ultimately going to animal testers. That's all sorts of ethical gray area for me. I mean sure, I'll eat meat for food and wear certain kinds of leather, but there's a line. For me, that line is animal testing and fur coats. Also sad, in that my favorite body lotion ever, Satsuma, comes from there. The bright side is that there are tons of great alternatives. The biggest alternative is LUSH, which has fun bath products, innovative shampoos, an awesome skincare line, and is absolutely, positively proactive in making sure their products have no animal-tested components. Villainess's Brooke makes kick-ass soaps and body scrubs which are completely vegan and cruelty free. FeMaledictions's sCara makes wonderful shea butter and olive oil soaps, sugar scrubs, leave-in skin and hair conditioner, and other stuff with a cool Goth tint. Skindazzles's Candy makes the most kick-ass body lotions in North America, which are available in kajilions of scents, some of which are duplicates of very popular scents from elsewhere (I think there's a Satsuma dupe order in my future). And aside from being cruelty free and really cool? Those last three are small, customer-service oriented businesses run by savvy, cool women.
7. TGIF. I'm off on Monday, thank God. Actually, I don't have a lot going on this weekend after tonight. I think it's a blessing. I've been asked to go a few places, including HFStival, but I really think that I just need a chill break. That crowd might send me over the edge. In all the stress, I've had remarkably little time to sit back and relax and get my head together. It's sad that I'll miss the Counting Crows, though. Oh, Adam Duritz, why won't you just come and perform 'Colorblind' in my living room?
