Thank God there are still smart people left in Maryland.

My favorite person today is Jamie Raskin.

The scene:: Wednesday, March 1st, 2006, in Annapolis at a hearing on the proposed Maryland Constitutional Amendment to prohibit gay marriage.

Republican Senator Nancy Jacobs:: "As I read Biblical principles, marriage was intended, ordained and started by God - that is my belief. For me, this is an issue solely based on religious principles."

Jamie Raskin:: "Senator, when you took your oath of office, you placed your hand on the Bible and swore to uphold the Constitution. You did not place your hand on the Constitution and swear to uphold the Bible."

Booyah.

Visit his website and read his entire address. It's amazing.

ETA:: Rambling thoughts-- what if someone being sworn in to office were not Christian? What if they were Wiccan, or Muslim, or Jewish, or an Atheist? Would they still have to swear on the Bible? That seems kind of odd to me.
