I've been really into myth-inspired music as of late. I've always been a Loreena McKennitt fan, and I've become a pretty big Faith & The Muse and Mediaeval Baebes fan. I like some Delerium, as well.
Beyond that? I don't even know where to start. I'd like to hear more Emilie Autumn and Cocteau Twins, I'd like to hear good Lisa Gerrard, I'd like to hear more obscure artists. I mean, I've never even heard Dead Can Dance.
So. I want to start an atmospheric mix-cd swap. Goth music, faerie music, Celtic music, Pagan music, fantasy-movie score, and mythologically-inspired music are all included under that vague umbrella term.
The point of this isn't to share single-albums of music. It's to put together a personalized CD of your favorite tracks and swap them. We increase awareness of different artists, which will likely lead to more of their CDs selling. Make sense?
If you sign up, you're committed to providing 10 copies of your personalized mix, decorated in any way you choose. You must provide a mix to receive CDs. If more people are interested than that, I'll come up with something.
What it is:: Everyone who signs up will produce 10 copies of a personal mix CD. The genre is atmospheric music. Goth music, faerie music, Celtic music, Pagan music, darkwave, fantasy-movie scores, and mythologically-inspired music are all included under this vague umbrella term.
If I join, how many CDs will I receive?:: Nine.
Why not just rip entire albums?:: The point of this isn't to share single-albums of music. It's to put together a personalized CD of your favorite tracks and swap them. Please make your mixes diverse. I don't want to sucker any artists out of royalties-- I want to increase awareness of different artists, especially more obscure artists, which will likely lead to more of their CDs selling, which is the goal. I need to diversify my CD collection, and many of the artists I love have depended on word-of-mouth and "hey, listen to this!" to get their music out there. If you love it, chances are that your recipient will love it too. Make sense?
How should my CD be presented?:: As long as your CD is presentable, I'm cool with it. No last-minute scrawl, please. This could be as simple as printed cardboard or tag stock. However, I'm really interested in seeing everyone's creativity. Make a fold-out book, use your own photography, use watercolors, use stickers, make sketches. It's your project, you may do as you choose.
How many tracks should I include?:: The minimum is 8 tracks. The maximum is however many you can fit on the CD.
How long do I have to send out my mixes?:: Six weeks. I would expect all ten copies of your mix sent out by March 31st, 2006.
How will I know where to send the copies?:: I will have a post with screened comments wherein participants will post their addresses. I will then mail each participant a list of 10 people to mail CDs to.
How will I package my finished product?:: Please bubblewrap the CD case, then seal it in a padded bubble mailer before you send it off.
When is the sign-up cutoff?:: No more participants will be accepted after February 18th, 2006. Please understand that if you commit to enter, you wll have no later than February 25th to bow out. Once you have received your addresses, someone will be expecting a CD from you.
Any suggestions for artists to include?:: Faith and the Muse. Loreena McKennitt. Azam Ali. The Mediaeval Baebes. Lisa Gerrard. Dead Can Dance. Enya. Emilie Autumn. Cocteau Twins. Delerium. Deep Forest. Heather Alexander. Selections from fantasy movie scores. Any artist that fits the above description-- the point is to get to hear lots of voices. Got more? Leave a comment and I'll add it.
How can I keep track of posts pertaining to the swap?:: All cd swap posts will be tagged like this one.
But I'm an Internet Lawyer and What You're Doing Is Illegal:: An anonymouse (207.67.146.130, 146.219.19.22) claiming to be a lawyer on the internet has already given me the "tsk tsk that is so illegal" lecture, complete with the "the RIAA is going to bust you" tag. Considering this is a small swap between friends, I don't think that this will be an issue unless someone goes out of the way to report it. Hell, there are huge communities dedicated to ripping entire albums and creating fanmixes, and I'm only supporting a small sampler swap in order to increase artist awareness. You know, so I can buy more CDs. Is it technically illegal? Yes. But I have received mixed tapes from friends on numerous occasions and not had the RIAA banging my door down for illegal use of Sarah McLachlan. Not to mention, I never would have heard of Damien Rice or Tom McRae or about a gazillion other artists that I love and thrust forth my hard-earned money for were it not for a mixed tape here and there. Also, it makes me giggle to think of that Duckie kid from Not Another Teen Movie being hauled off in handcuffs because he made 1,000 "I love you" mixed tapes for Janie. Or Rob Gordon of High Fidelity, for that matter. (And just so we're clear on this, theRIAAsucksballs.) Shit, maybe next week, I'll be slapped on the wrist for jaywalking or having sex outside of the missionary position, which are both illegal in Maryland, by the way.
At any rate, I'm willing to take this risk. If you're not, however, I suggest you bow out. I'm not going to friendslock these posts, because some of the participants are not on my friendslist. If we agree, I will make a closed community for one limited swap. However, I do ask that you only put music on your CD that you own, and that you keep the artists diverse.
