I have found a pairing that requires more fluff and denial than even Buffy/Angel.
It's been fairly publicized on the spoiler boards that Tara will die soon. I love Tara and Amber Benson... I'm sure I'll be all upset when it happens, but I have faith in Joss that it's for the good of the show, and if she's meant to come back, she will.
I stopped by the Kitten Board solely to follow the link to the audio promo of "Seeing Red" (and by the way, ouch). It was hard to listen to, but some of of the reactions to it were just plain stepping over the line.
I would not like to be any employee of ME when this airs, lest W/T shippers try to burn down my home. These people are taking it as a personal affront, like ME wrote this plotting specifically as a slap in the face to them. Others are coming down with the the Spuffy/"I hate S6 because it's not roses and lace" syndrome and threatening to jump ship and not watch "Firefly." *snort* Wow. That hurts.
Others are acting like Tara's their girlfriend and going into mourning, others are lambasting Amber for "not caring about her fans," and others are in a firm state of denial.
Denial comes in two distinct flavors at the Kitten Board:
-"This is all just a plot by ME to fuck over spoiler whores."
and other brilliant quotes such as this, by Sarabie317:
"If the writers don't give me what I want, I'll take what they give me and make some alterations in my own little mind. I'll rewrite whatever parts I need to rewrite in order to have this work out the way I want it to. If Willow hurts any innocent bystanders, I'll make them bad guys in my mind. If Willow fights Buffy, I'll make it so Willow is not wrong in doing so. Whatever happens, I'll make it work the way I want it to - or edit it out."
Right, now I remember why I avoid the Kitten Board like the plague.
Yet, these are most likely the same people who lauded S2 as the best ever. 'Cuz Buffy sending Angel to hell after long episodes of sexual taunts, kidnapping, torture, and death weren't dark at all.
And as to the question, "Is this entertainment?" Yes, kiddies, it is. Nobody said entertainment had to be bunnies and sunshine all the time. If it was, wouldn't you get bored and fall asleep? Furthermore, entertainment analyzes the culture, and our culture is a far cry from happyland. We need plot twists, we need character analyzation, and sometimes that calls for a dark element.
Fear not. I Joss I trust. It's always been a wild ride, and I'm not getting off just yet.
