Three films.
1. Gangs of New York. Why do I not own a copy of this movie? I need to fix that. Daniel Day Lewis's performance as Bill the Butcher is probably my very favorite performance of any actor, ever. He owned that role, and the fact that he didn't get the Oscar for it will forever bug the shit out of me.
2. Dirty Dancing. The movie that made me want to be a dancer. I watched it over and over and over again in my childhood. I wore out VHS tapes of it even before I had any clue what it meant that Penny was 'sick.' I swan-dived on my little beanbag chair, pretending I was doing the lifts. This movie, man. I love it so.
3. Ink. A shoestring budget indie fantasy film. I am continually amazed at how fantastic this movie is, considering the budgetary constraints. The cast clearly loves it, and the message is strong and powerful. The imagery will knock you off your chair. When I saw it (on Netflix streaming!), I immediately bought a copy for me and a copy to share.
Honorary mentions: Practical Magic (but y'all knew that), The Young Victoria (because I love costume dramas, and this is a favorite), Pride and Prejudice - the 2005 film-- because I will forever take the apparently heretical stance that it is superior to the BBC miniseries.
