Oh, marshmallow creme donut, you make me so happy. :)

afoundobject-- I am to explain these seven interests in my userinfo:
1. Brahms-- One of my favorite lieder composers. Such romantic, soft, layered works. Heartbreaking and hopeful and incredibly wonderful. Two of my most defining singing experiences were his Liebeslieder Waltzes (in particular, "Nachtigall, Sie Singt So Schon") and his German Requiem, which I have performed twice-- once in concert (the one in which Ariel fainted) and once at the funeral of my first voice teacher, Mr. Charles Richardson. I love the entirety of the piece-- the mournful meditation of "Denn alles Fleisch, es ist wie Gras" (mvmt 2), the passionate defiance of an entire choir roaring "Death, death, where is thy sting?" during the sixth movement, and finally the sweet, swelling catharsis of movement 7, "How lovely is thy dwelling place, oh Lord of hosts?" My experience of singing that piece-- the high notes through the tears-- is probably the most moving and heartfelt memory I have of my years as a singer.
2. Dangly earrings-- I wore a lot of really safe jewelry growing up, or no jewelry at all. It wasn't until I started making jewelry and doing bellydance that I got into fancy dangly earrings. And I like really unique ones. So there's that.
3. Dendrobium orchids-- Ohh, dendrobiums. Next to stargazers, these are my favorite flowers. They're so delicate and saturated with color. I love the bluish-purples ones so much-- the color of the sky at twilight.
4. High heels-- It's an aesthetic thing. I've been wearing heels for as long as I can remember due to performing, and I feel very comfortable in them, despite constantly being told that they're going to wreck my back, etc. I try to mix it up these days with thick lug heels and my Docs, but sometimes, you just gotta break out the high heels. I think they're sexy.
5. Gerbera daisies-- One of my favorite spring flowers. I like the many bright colors they come in, and they always make me smile, especially the really big ones.
6. Opera-- I studied classical music and opera from age 14 (TWIGS after school) through high school (Baltimore School for the Arts, major: vocal performance) and into college (music minor, vocal concentration). Technically, my voice classification is lyric soprano, though I have the potential to be coloratura (I have a high f#). I performed opera during this time-- I was best suited to Mozart's ladies, so I did Pamina, Susanna, Zerlina, Lady I in Magic Flute, etc. And while I liked doing opera work and performing with a group, I both hated a) the snobbery and competition and all around icky cutthroat atmosphere of the music performance world and b) the horrendous stage fright I got at solo performances. I would shake, shiver, throw up, the works. In the end, I decided that it simply wasn't for me, though I still do very much enjoy choral work and going to operatic performances.
7. Young adult literature-- YA lit saved my life. Really, it did. When I couldn't stand to be in the real world, I retreated to books. Encyclopedia Brown, Narnia, Christopher Pike, LJ Smith, Holly Black, Francesca Lia Block, Judy Blume... I think, on some level, seeing characters my age who were strong, smart, underdog survivors really instilled in me the necessary fire to rise above the mediocrity that was expected of me by my peers. I learned that being smart wasn't a bad thing, and I could use it as a tool to put myself in a healthier place. I want to pay it back by being a YA novelist someday. And I still love good YA fiction-- I can't wait to meet Holly Black and have her sign my copy of Ironside!
If anyone else has curiosity about any of my interests, I'd be happy to illuminate them!
