Hee. Tonight was spent doing bellydance practice. We focused on zills, mostly because my zilling is egregious. Wait, scratch that. My zilling is fine. My zilling while dancing is egregious. I can dance and I can zill, just not necessarily at the same time.
We did two of the combos from Ansuya's zills dvd. First of all-- watching Flissy and I attempt cabaret posture to match Ansuya is worth its weight in comedic gold. We started out fine, but by the end of the exercise, we'd firmly slid back into tribal posture. Knees bent, pelvis tucked, back straight, chest open, shoulders down, elbows slightly higher. Funny how it seemed so alien to me when I started, and now it's my natural dance posture. Thank god for all of my teachers who have corrected the n00b duck-butt and will continue to do so.
Anyway, we did some work with the dvd, then some lead-and-follow (Flissy leading, 'cause she's much better at zilling than I am), and then Flissy taught me a really cool zill combo she learned from the Kajira workshop she took that will look so cute when we get it down.
We met up with Ariel for dinner and chick-flick-ing with ice cream. We talked about Bellypalooza, and Ariel told us about her first beginning tribal workshop and demonstrated her take on adapting to the posture. Ariel is learning mostly cabaret style, so we had a moment of hilarity wherein Flissy and I attempted cabaret and Ariel attempted tribal. Ah, cultural exchange. Ariel is starting to get the cabaret faces down, and oh my lord, it is so funny. The drama of them! Flirty, pouty, big cheesy grins. I really think somebody should compile a visual dictionary of bellydance faces-- everything from "the Ansuya" to the tribal "I am a big powerful mother-Goddess and you are NOT gonna fuck with me" face. These things should be recorded for posterity. At any rate, Ariel showed us a cute zill combo that includes partnered dancers clanging each others' zills, and I think that'd be neat to work into a duo. I love my bellydance girls.
Oh, and one last thing. Rufus Sewell decidedly does not look like a frog, despite what certain short, red-headed people of no consequence might say. So there.
