Today finds me cold.

The sky is gray, it's still windy, and my house has been without power for nearing twenty four hours. Downed trees and powerlines all over the place. The indoor temperature is about 45 degrees. My fish? They are not happy. In fact, they weren't so much moving this morning. I had to light tealights under the sides of their bowls, it was that cold. Dixie will be home until 1pm to test the water temperature and switch out the tealights, and if the power is still not on by the time I get home, the fishes will be packed up and taken to Skyler's, because they're not going to make it another night, otherwise. Poor Wasabi was pitifully hovering over the spot of warmth before I left. I didn't want to go.

The office has power, but is likewise cold. Our internet is spotty, and inter-office email is not working as it should. At least I have a portable heater under the desk. Thank god. Also, Harry brought me fancy chocolates as a thank you for helping him get his office together. Two big dark chocolate truffles powdered with iridescent gold and green dust. This is gonna be a hot chocolate day, I can just feel it.

And then there's the Virginia Tech news. I just can't wrap my head around it right now. I'm kind of stunned-- not shocked, just stunned and sad and numb. There's a lot of good in the world, but it's hard to see it on days like today.

ETA: It's 12:30, there will be no heat for at least 5 more hours. The fish are getting moved tonight, but until then, they'll be stored in a closet (!) in the same room as the parrot (because it's the warmest in the house, currently) until I get home. What an ordeal.
