If you will forgive my indulgence, it must be said that at this very moment, I smell absolutely, positively swoon-worthy.
Snake Oil-- By far, our most popular scent! Magnetic, mysterious, and exceedingly sexual in nature. A blend of exotic Indonesian oils sugared with vanilla.
Snake Oil is kind of a wonder. New and fresh, it's light, sweet, interesting and flirty. But my bottle is about a year and a half old-- the real draw of Snake Oil is how it ages. I can still catch very faint, innocent wafts of baby-powder, but now the oil has gotten thick, sexy, decadent. To me, Snake Oil smells like the richest amber spilled over vanilla beans and sandalwood, with a little bit of patchouli and spice. Like an exotic tapestry, or a gypsy store.
Last year, when I was first getting into BPAL, I bought a bottle of this without even having sniffed a tester. I was sure I'd like it. I had no idea how much I would truly love it-- when I received my bottle, I had a total close your eyes, gasp in pleasure reaction. And that was nice, but the bottle has only continued to deepen as it ages. For a while, my bottle had taken on a bit of a wine tinge, too, but that seems to have aged away.
Come to think of it, most of my favorite BPALs age well-- The Lion's sweet amber becomes deeper, spicier; Hamadryad loses its horrid wintergreen note to become dry spices and woods; Samhain mellows to pumpkin, fir, and mulled spices; Beaver Moon went from tooth-aching cheesecake to warmed Snickerdoodle cookies. That's probably because spices are among my absolute favorite notes.
Speaking of spices, I'm craving Autumn in a serious way. It always starts like this-- just past Litha, but not quite Lammas. We still have about two sweltering summer months before the leaves begin to turn. I think I'm going to paint a special box for my collection of Autumnal perfumes and leave it on my altar this year. From BPAL, I have Samhain, hoarded half-bottles of Mabon (blackberries and ivy) and Lughnasadh (mulled cherries), Harvest Moon 2004 (buttery grains) and 2005 (mulled cider), as well as two of my favorite Pumpkin Patch offerings from last year and imps of Jack and Scarecrow.
The minute sCara from FeMaledictions puts up her Samhain gift sets this year, my credit card will be out. I need to re-order my favorite scents from there, too-- Canopic (spicy honey musk), Funeral Pyre (the best true-to-life bonfire scent I have ever smelled), Witchy Sweets (mulled spices), Bewitched (spiced woods), Sleepy Hollow (incredibly atmospheric), and Descent (the exact scent of Autumn air). Arcana also has a Sleepy Hollow oil I want to try. And I should probably buy a new DVD-- I've worn mine out.
...and to think, only two and a half months to the equinox. Feh.
